My internship was at Zia. I learned a lot and even got a shift 1 day a week.
Today I worked cleaning tables. My main job was front of house help and bringing dishes to the back. I saw respect when people were always helping me out and giving me advice.
I saw Integrity when a coworker spilled something in the back, and he picked it up. I saw Effort when everybody was just running around and working. Zia is a fast paced job and you can never be standing around. There was a customer who asked me a question about catering. I thankfully gave them a good answer on how we couldn’t do orders exceeding 10 people. I learned how fast people work and how much effort they put into their jobs. I worked a 7 hour shift instead of 3, and it was really easy. People were saying that my feet and back would hurt after standing for 7 hours. Later in the night my feet started to hurt a little, along with my legs. The next morning I felt like I could work another 7 hours.
Today I worked 4 hours which was not as bad as 7 hours, and I got to the job right in the middle of a lunch rush and I had to get right to work by bringing dishes to the back and wiping tables. By around 1:00 it started to cool down a little bit. I saw respect when people were always asking how their day has been and always being kind. I saw effort even when people had multiple jobs to do and they were still running around working. I was super happy to be working the register and I learned a lot. The hardest part is the abbreviations. If you have seen a Zia bag before it says stuff like BB, MX, M, RB, B. Those letters mean something. For example M would be a big item with meat and 2 or more cold toppings. It is hard to memorize all of the letters and what they mean, but it is very important. I started on the register when the business was slow, so that I could get a feel for how it would work. As soon as I got to the register, people started paying in cash, which was annoying because I had to do their math on how much change to give them.
This was the last day of my internship and I did a lot of REG. Surprisingly there wasn't as big of a lunch rush but during the lunch rush I was running around bringing dishes back to the kitchen. Today was a lot easier because I was studying the abbreviations so using the REG was a lot easier. I saw respect when people were always helping each other out. One way I showed integrity and respect was when I was helping people out with stuff when they were busy. Furthermore I got to learn about shift change. Shift change is when the morning shift leaves and the night shift comes in. Before the night shift comes, the morning shift has to clean. Doing stuff like mopping the floors, cleaning the bathrooms, and also wiping the windows. When I got there in the morning before they opened, I did stuff like refilling napkins and also putting down chairs. In the morning is when people are making the food and getting ready for the first customer. I also refilled chips while we weren't busy because we sell a lot of chip bags during just 1 day. I made over 200 chip bags throughout the week. Overall I learned a lot about how the business is run. I also learned how fast paced working in a restaurant is.
For the internship presentations I got an excess. According to the rubric I had good body language and reflected deeply on the skills I learned.
The presentation was for the 7th graders so that they understand what internships actually are when they get to 8th grade.
