Video-based Questioning

• Students respond to a priming question posed by the teacher to activate prior knowledge

• Students think through their observations using sense-making questions provided by the teacher

• Students consolidate learning and organise their ideas and evidence for these ideas into a content outline, in response to a discursive question

Design Tips for Teachers

• Priming questions allow students to use what they know, and reveal what they do not know

• Observation questions direct students' attention to relevant details that students are likely to miss

• Sense-making questions guide students to analyse and integrate information

• Discursive questions enable students to connect the new content (from video) to existing knowledge and real-world experience

Designing the video-based questioning task was not as easy as I expected. Finding suitable videos was a real challenge, as we tried to strike a balance between engagement and educational value. Generating stimulating yet focused questions that would be relevant to the students was something that really brought out our creativity. It took some time before the team arrived at a satisfactory set of questions, but all our efforts were worth it when I saw the richness of students' response, and heard them share how much they enjoyed the learning task.
