Students' Learning Experience

• Students engage in discussion with the teacher on how to identify and analyse the key elements of a newscast

• Students work in groups to develop a newscast script based on Internet research done on a real-world issue

• Students create a newscast that incorporates the key elements learnt earlier

• Students review each others' newscast for the different ways through which messages can be communicated

Design Tips for Teachers

• Discussion prompts could include prefab, appeal, message and intent of a newscast

• Scaffold the task with instructions to generate and evaluate different perspectives and support their views with evidence

• Encourage students to consider how they can communicate a coherent message via multiple modes e.g. aural & visual

• Enable self-reflection through questions, to evaluate the their newscasts in relation to what they have learnt

When we raise our students' awareness of media literacy, this can better prepare them to meet the changing needs of society. It is good that students learn about media literacy when they are in primary school. As it promotes critical thinking as well as evaluative skills, they can apply these skills when they progress to the next level of education.
