Walk for Rice, an annual event organised by the Student Development committee has successfully completed the week- long event. Springfield’s teachers and students walked 11020.31km and donated 36,734 bowls of rice to the less fortunate. The school has achieved our target of 30,000 bowls of rice for donation and commemorate 30 years of Springfield.
Walking for a good cause
Both Springfield students and staff walked the distance every day for a week for a good cause. Ariel Chong of 4C clocked a whopping 166.8km over a total of 37 runs. Said Ariel, “I wanted to help the needy as much as I can. So I would walk with my family and friends. My parents also supported me and walked with me too.” For many, the gruelling walks took a toll on their sore feet but they still persevered. Madam Xiong Xiao Dong added, “I still continued to walk and ended up with plasters all over my feet. However, the need to help overcame these challenges."
Reducing Carbon Footprint
This week-long walk took place amidst long work and school hours. So how did some manage to clock in the walks? For many innovative teachers, it was taking a walk instead of taking the public transport enroute to school. Said one of the teachers who topped the leader board at 103.5km over 44 runs, Mr Abbas Amir, “What I did was to walk everywhere. I walked to school and back. I also walked to buy my food and run errands instead of taking the bus.”
In order to meet the set target, Madam Suzanne Gomes, also used a similar strategy. “I woke up a bit earlier in the morning to walk to school. It was a good way to start the day yet contribute to a good cause.”
Friendly Competition
For many students, they were able to compete in their class groups against other classes. It was the spirit of healthy competition that egged them on to achieve just a little more. It set the adrenaline on a high as they tried to achieve the 10km target set for each class. Secondary 4G, achieved the highest mileage per student with 23.99 km. Led by Chairman Megan Wong, who came in 5th at 103.5 km, she said, “Running is something I always do on a regular basis so this was an opportunity to see how far I could go and stretch myself. It was interesting to see the live updates as it motivated me to just run a bit more. As Chairman, I also felt that I should model the way for the rest of the class. I’m so glad that we topped the charts.”
This year, the staff were also placed into different groups to challenge each other. Ctrl + Alt + Del (the tech team) emerged the top of the leader board for collectively walking a total of 321.9 km. For teacher Mr Lim Yu Jie, “It is my first time competing in this event but I think it is definitely competing for a good cause.”
