With the resumption of face-to-face interactions, we had many opportunities to participate in various activities. There were many memorable moments from the March and June camps to Enrolment Service and preparation for our 30th Anniversary Pearl Parade. These sessions taught me the importance of looking out for one another as we go through all the activities as a team. Having physical sessions that included parade practices and physical conditioning also became tough at times, but it was the team spirit among us that helped me go through it. As a senior, I also developed a greater sense of responsibility in listening to instructions and planning activities for my juniors.
Team Bonding and Activities Post Covid

At the start of the year, we welcomed new members into our CCA and so for the orientation, our teachers organised a balloon-making class for the seniors to get to know our new Sec 1s. During CCA sessions in school and outside of school, we also created unbreakable bonds and memories with each other that we would cherish forever and we were taught many values like respect and responsibility by our officers and teachers. Now that the COVID-19 Safe Management Measures have been relaxed, our CCA has kickstarted many activities for us to take part in like a pottery class, camp and our enrolment that we were unable to participate in for the last two years because of COVID.

The National Cadet Corps’ (NCC) mission is to nurture inspiring leaders and committed citizens through fun, adventurous and military-related activities. It is considered to be a precursor to National Service. Similar to National Service, the NCC places a heavy emphasis on values such as discipline, integrity, and camaraderie. The NCC strives to inculcate such values in the formative years of cadets so that they would be able to perform their National Service with greater aptitude and ability. Besides values, the NCC also provides cadets with opportunities to experience NS life through its many camps. For instance, in Camp STEEL, Secondary 2 cadets get the opportunity to hone their leadership skills and experience using the SAR-21 rifle firsthand. STEEL stands for Standards, Tenacity, Emotional Intelligence, Energy, and Leadership.

“Ever since I was young, I have always feared National Service. I thought that I would fall behind my peers in performance as I felt that the time given to prepare was minimal at best. NCC has changed my perception of the National Service entirely. After experiencing many camps and participating in many military-related activities, I feel exponentially more confident in my abilities and more patriotic as the brotherhood and camaraderie I’ve experienced during my time in NCC is incomparable.”

The goal of NPCC is to guide the students to be confident, outgoing, and disciplined. The various courses given to cadets help them grow as an individual, and teaches them life skills such as teamwork and resilience. Programmes such as annual camps, parades, drill and campcraft competitions, weapons training as well as volunteer work has taught everyone to be more resilient, and to respect and accept each other’s differences. As they work towards becoming men and women of character, the students have forged life-long bonds with their fellow squad mates.
Each course attended is essential in shaping their journey as cadets. With each newly attained badge, they continue to improve themselves to become active citizens of the community. The clear path of progression and ranking system within the UG provides them with an end goal in mind, spurring them to achieve greater heights.
