Each learner in the program is assigned an MLC faculty mentor. The faculty mentor serves as both an academic advisor, helping with course selection and enrollment, and an academic coach, providing general guidance for academic success and persistence.
The faculty mentor maintains the learner's program progress report, updating the shared document as a learner completes courses. This shared document is a fundamental resource used to help the learner plan their courses accordingly. The faculty mentor and the learner will refer to this document when they meet four weeks before the start of a term to plan courses for the upcoming term. At the end of that meeting, the faculty mentor will send an email to confirm whether or not the learner will be a full-time or part-time learner in the upcoming term, the courses they will be enrolled in, and the intended order of engagement.
The faculty mentor is also able to see a learner's level of engagement within their individual courses. This insight into their activity in Brightspace is referred to in each of the monthly meetings scheduled during a term, which usually begins by celebrating successes and discussing the learners' concerns. The faculty mentor will guide the learner in considering specific academic success strategies, refer the learner to other MLC resources as needed, and work with the learner to set realistic academic goals based on the information gathered from Brightspace.
The faculty mentor also receives an alert if a learner has not logged into Brightspace in five (5) consecutive days and sends a request to meet with that learner to discuss their engagement with the program. If a learner does not engage in Brightspace for more than ten (10) consecutive days, the learner will be contacted by the Director of the Nontraditional Education Program. Learners who have not accessed their courses in D2L Brightspace for more than two weeks may be withdrawn from the course and the program by the Director of the Nontraditional Education Program.
