Graduates of the APPLE program at MLC complete several required field experiences and a literacy clinical as part of their studies. Individuals who are currently serving as a classroom paraprofessional or in a teaching role at their local WELS school may be able to earn credit-by-experience. Your faculty mentor will help you navigate whether or not you are eligible for the credit-by-experience option.
In this 0.5 credit experience, APPLE learners engage in activities and experiences designed to introduce them to the roles and responsibilities of the teaching ministry.
In this 0.5 credit experience, APPLE learners engage in observation and participate in an elementary classroom.
In this 0.5 credit experience, APPLE learners engage in a minimum of 70 hours of field experience related to the teaching ministry. The 70 hours fall into three categories:
Congregational Service – Must be gained in a congregation or congregational services in the community. Minimum of 10 hours in at least two different types of activities.
Teaching and Instructional Activities – Must be gained in an instructional setting or activity focused on delivering content. Minimum of 15 hours.
Youth Service (ages 0-18) – Must be gained involving interaction with children or adolescents in a congregation or in the community. Minimum of 20 hours in at least two different types of activities.
The 70 hours of experiences are to be completed by the time one applies for student teaching.
In this 1 credit experience, APPLE learners engage in a three-week experience in an elementary classroom. Learners observe, tutor, teach small groups, and teach selected whole class lessons. This experience is typically completed in the same term or immediately after completing EDU 3201 Children's Literature, EDU 3205 Teaching Language Arts, and EDU 3210 Teaching Reading.
