Martin Luther College does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national and ethnic origin, age, sex, or marital status in the administration of its educational policies, admission policies, scholarship and loan programs, athletics, and other college-administered programs, policies, and practices. Martin Luther College, as the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod’s college of ministry, serves all, without exception, who meet the biblical and synodical standards for service in the church.
MLC leverages an online application portal. Before you begin the application process, please review the information included in this section of the APPLE catalog to better understand the application requirements, application process, and personal statement, as well as the FERPA release that you will be asked to complete as part of the application process.
In addition to completing the online application with your personal information, you will also need to submit documentation to support your application. As you prepare your application material, it will be important to pull together the following:
A recommendation letter from your congregation’s pastor or the principal/director of a Lutheran Early Childhood Center, Elementary School, or Area Lutheran High School.
Transcripts
Personal Statement
If accepted, learners are asked to submit a $135 non-refundable, deposit to confirm their intention to participate in the program. Upon enrollment, the college applies $100 of the deposit to the first term’s tuition. The remaining $35 is applied to the Admissions Processing Fee, the only fee that you will be charged as a learner at MLC.
Applicants who completed their secondary education in the United States and its territories should request an official transcript from the high school they graduated from.
Applicants who completed college courses and/or degrees at an accredited institution of higher education in the United States and its territories should request official transcripts from all institutions they attended.
Applicants who completed college courses and/or degrees at an institution of higher education outside of the United States and its territories should submit a foreign transcript evaluation.

A recommendation letter from your WELS or WELS-affiliated congregation’s pastor or an administrator or teacher of a WELS or WELS-affiliated Early Childhood Center, Elementary School, or Area Lutheran High School.
The person you ask to write your letter of reference should be someone who knows you well, knows your interests in serving in the public ministry, and can speak to your gifts, talents, and abilities. The letter should be about a page in length.
Letters of reference should be submitted by the person you asked to write the letter as a signed PDF attachment to an email sent from their church or school email to admissions@mlc-wels.edu.
If you would like to ask someone who is not currently serving as a church leader, school principal, or teacher to serve as your reference, please contact the Director of Nontraditional Education to discuss your request.
The Personal Statement is your opportunity to share with us how you define the term and what it means to you to join the WELS public ministry by answering the question “What does the term “Christian Educator” mean to you.
As a personal statement, we are not limiting your expression to an essay. You have several options to consider as you craft your definition of “Christian Educator”:
You can certainly craft a short essay of 750 words or less as your response.
You can also be more creative and frame your statement as a letter, short story, or poem.
If your gifts are in public speaking, you can record a brief (10 minutes or less) presentation and either upload the mP4 or share the link to a video available through an internet service, e.g. YouTube.
If you express yourself best through music, you can share a recording of musical composition (5 minutes or less) with a brief explanation of its significance in relation to understanding the term Christian Educator.
If the visual arts are your preferred means of expression, you can share a digital image of your artwork(s) with a brief explanation (written or audio/video recording) of the digital portfolio’s significance in relation to understanding the term Christian Educator.
The intention of the personal statement is not to eliminate students from our program. Instead, the intention is to better prepare you for the course of study you are about to begin.
Most of the information requested of you for the application is straightforward. The required personal information – name, address, phone number, email address – and demographic information – age, gender, race/ethnicity – are typical of most applications.
There is one section that requires additional explanation. Included in your application is the option to share with us who can receive information about your tuition and academic progress in the program. The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) ensures that your information is only shared with those you identify. The individual(s) you include in this portion of your application will be able to call or request information in writing regarding your tuition statements, scholarship or financial aid, and academic progress. You do not need to include any individual in this section.
You will be prompted to review any individuals you have listed on your information release annually, and you can also change this information at any time during your studies (changing the information can take up to two business days to process through all of our systems).
Additionally, Martin Luther College collects and maintains directory information on students. Directory information includes the learner’s:
