MATHEMATICS PROGRAM

The mathematics program at Milton High School consists of integrated math courses – offered at the college prep and honors level – during the first two years that address critical concepts in the areas of algebra, geometry, and statistics in alignment with the 2017 Massachusetts Mathematics Curriculum Framework (pp. 129-145). The majority of students entering 11th grade continue onto Algebra II (Honors or College Prep), but for a small percentage of students who have excelled in the honors-level 10th grade course, it is recommended they bypass Algebra II and enroll instead in PreCalculus (AP or Honors) as a junior in order to reach a calculus course the following year. Senior year math course options include Calculus (AP BC, AP AB, or Honors) for students who have completed Precalculus in 11th grade, Statistics (AP or Honors), PreCalculus (AP  or Honors), College Algebra (College Prep), and Applied Mathematics (College Prep).

All Milton High School students must pass the equivalent of four full-year math courses to meet the graduation requirement.

As the MHS Math Course Sequence Graphic indicates, students have a variety of opportunities to take AP, Honors, or College Prep level math courses (and move from one level to another) along a Pre-Calculus/Calculus pathway for students who intend to pursue a STEM-related career in the future or a Statistics/Applied Math/College Algebra pathway for students who intend to pursue a non-STEM related career in the future. Course recommendation placements are done by teachers using data and with the best interest of the student in mind to ensure success. Recommendation overrides are discouraged because they often result in the need for a schedule change during the school year. Please be aware that all AP math courses have a required summer assignment.

Through our existing partnership with Quincy College, students enrolled in any of the following math courses at Milton High School are eligible to earn three college credits at a significantly reduced cost of $350 by earning a final grade of C or higher that are transferable to many colleges and universities: Honors PreCalculus, Honors Statistics, Honors Calculus, and CP College Algebra.

Regardless of specific content or level, every math course at Milton High School features opportunities for students to use technology effectively, apply concepts to a real world context, and develop their critical thinking, reasoning, and problem solving skills.
