PreCalculus

PRECALCULUS AP 22507 Honors 22401

5 credits

Prerequisite: Algebra II Honors (or Integrated Math II Honors by recommendation only)

Both versions of this course are designed for seniors who excelled in Algebra II Honors in 11th grade and are considering pursuing a four year college degree in business or a STEM-related field, which would require a calculus course in their future, and juniors who demonstrated a high enough level of proficiency in Integrated Math II Honors in 10th grade to be able to bypass an Algebra II course and jump directly into this course with the intent to continue onto a calculus course in 12th grade.

In both versions of this course, students will expand beyond the knowledge and understanding they gained of linear, quadratic, and exponential functions from preceding courses to discover the characteristics of more advanced function types.

The AP version of this course consists of the following four units of study and attends to three mathematical practices — (1) Procedural and symbolic fluency; (2) Multiple representations; and (3) Communication and reasoning — as described on pp. 17-27 of the AP Precalculus Course Exam and Description:

In order to enroll in AP Calculus BC in 12th grade, a student must take and excel in AP PreCalculus in 11th grade.

The honors version of this course addresses the same three mathematical practices as the AP version and attends to the same mathematical content from Units 1, 2, and 3 from the AP course description. Students who enroll and excel in Honors PreCalculus in 11th grade are well prepared to continue onto AP Calculus AB or Honors Calculus in 12th grade.

Students enrolled in both versions of this course will be required to complete a summer assignment and to own or borrow a graphing calculator.

Students enrolled in the AP version of this course will be required to take the AP exam.

Students enrolled in the Honors version of this course will have the opportunity to earn three college credits from Quincy College at a cost of $350 as long as they successfully complete the course with a final grade of C or higher.
