Statistics

STATISTICS    AP 23516 Honors 23415

5 credits

Prerequisite: Algebra II

Both versions of this course are designed for seniors who took and performed well in Algebra II in 11th grade and are not considering pursuing a career in business or a STEM-related field, which would require a calculus in their future. Some seniors who are unsure of their future plans may consider taking either version of this course along with AP or Honors PreCalculus to maximize their preparation for the math they will be required to complete in college. Also, AP Statistics can be taken as a second math class in 10th grade (in addition to Integrated Math II Honors) or 11th grade (in addition to AP or Honors PreCalculus) for students who have a strong interest and have demonstrated a high level of mastery to date in math.

The AP version of this course includes the following nine units of study (not necessarily in the same order) and attends to a variety of mathematical skills that fall within four main categories — (1) Selecting statistical methods; (2) Data analysis; (3) Using probability and simulation; and (4) Statistical argumentation — as described on pp. 16-25 of the AP Statistics Course Exam and Description:

The honors version of this course addresses many of the same skills as the AP versions and attends to the same mathematical content from Units 1-7 from the AP course description.

Students enrolled in the AP version of this course will be required to complete a summer assignment, to own or borrow a graphing calculator, and to take the AP exam.

Students enrolled in the Honors version of this course will have the opportunity to earn three college credits from Quincy College at a cost of $350 as long as they successfully complete the course with a final grade of C or higher.
