2 left: Special Ed and Professional Expectations!!
is the benchmark our professionals measure their effectiveness. It covers 4 culture building cornerstones (pink) and 5 learning cycle episodes (blue). We build culture by having:
clear organizations, rules and procedures
building positive relationships
promoting engagement and enjoyment
creating a culture of thinking and learning
The learning cycle goes through 5 stages in order:
Preparing students for new learning
Presenting new learning
Deepening and reinforcing learning
Applying Learning
Reflecting on and Celebrating Learning
based on Carl Jung's work on defining learning cycles
it gets to deep understanding
not about rote memorization or just passing tests. It's about application and analysis
always happening, repetitive and recursive, like a fractal!
Bloom's/Webb's taxonomy
Reflecting on learning (ep 9) usually flows right into a new cycle (ep 5)
includes steps often missed in traditional classrooms (like reflecting, preparing, etc)
Fun fact, the 5 episodes overlap with the 4MAT learning cycle- both started in the Silver and Strong research.
Overlap with Think:Kids (what does this mean? More explanation)
students can't learn unless they are supported and engaged
Maslow's hierarchy
Are your basic needs being met to be a learner?
We do it in many areas: advisory, studios, larger community
Sometimes overlooked in traditional schools
Interpersonal one on one relations with learners, indie projects
Some ways we do these: real world examples
Students design their own projects
Community Service and internships - learning about local culture
Learning team meetings as a way to support students
Community meetings (morning mtg, etc)
Circles/ Clearing
Student give feedback
Self-assessments
Formal Profesional Evaluations
Learning Walks: informal, 10 min, "walking the walls"
Formal Observation: prep, observation, post- may have a focusing lens
4Ps Peer feedback: spontaneous, uses the 4Ps
use an example from one box, and decode it
Books- "Tools For a Successful School year" (orange book) is about the "cornerstones." "Tools for Thoughtful Assessment" (the green book) is about the "episodes." Claims have been made about the potential existence of a blue one.
