MC2 has not invented much of its structures, however, we are committed to authentic implementation of the philosophies and methods. Much of this is exhibited in the way we talk about our work.
...which means we use strange words to mean specific things in our model.
Below is an emerging glossary of common MC2 terms and their definitions.
CBRP- College/ Career Bound Reading Project- Every phase each student does 5 reading projects based on books, articles, etc about any topic they want.
Reading Log- Students read 4 books of their choice and fill out a short reading log in Project Foundry.
SSR- Sustained Silent Reading: Research shows that people should read at least 20 minutes per day. This is a time in advisory when everyone reads a book of their choice.
MOLO - Making Community Connections Orientation learning Opportunity- This is an introductory project that every student does when they enter MC2 to learn the process of the school.
EOD/EOW/ EOQ-End of Day/Week reflection. Each day students write a 200 word reflection about their day. At the end of the week students write a 500 word reflection. When the quarter is done, students write a 1000 word reflection about the quarter.
Advisory- A smaller community within the school that acts as a home base. Students start and end their day in advisory. This is a space where goals, SSR and EOD's take place.
Advisor- the staff member who guides a student through their phases of MC2.
Support Staff - a non-teaching staff member supporting student learning. Usually assigned to meet a special ed need.
School Leader - This is our head of school, like a principal.
Learner - "We are all learners" but this usually refers to a student
NDFL- Neurodevelopmental Framework for Learning
QED - the founding non-profit organization of MC2 Charter School.
Habits - The lifelong skills for learning that comprise half the MC2 curriculum
Internship - an authentic, work-based learning opportunity
Trek- an authentic, out-of-school learning opportunity
Career cluster - the groupings of career fields by common traits, i.e. mechanic, hospitality, agriculture, or business, to name a few.
Learning Team- Team of people that support the student (Student, advisor, parent/guardian)
LTM- Learning Team Meeting: meeting to discuss how to best support the student going forward
Project Foundry- the online platform used to keep track of learning opportunities, EOD's, checklists, competencies, etc.
Learning Opportunities- Any way that a student can earn credit
Phases (1-4)- similar to grades (9-12) students work through at their own pace.
Gateway- When a student moves from one phase to another (ie. 1-2) or graduates.
Checklists- Each student has 2 check lists EK and phase checklists. These need to be checked off before a student can graduate or gateway
Phase- Checklist that consists of all of the phase work a student needs to get including ELA, wellness (PE/health), EOD's, etc. Each phase a student gets a new checklist
EK-Essential Knowledge- This is a checklist of all of the competencies that students need to get in order to graduate. It consists of what is traditionally referred to as core classes.
Competencies- State standards that have been categorized and rewritten to make more sense.
TCTEF (Thoughtful Classroom Teacher Effective Framework)- Benchmark for how professionals measure effectiveness. It covers 4 corner stones and 5 episodes
Episodes- Content for Building Culture and Learning
Cornerstones- How we Build Culture of Learning
Learning Cycle- Created to form deep understanding of content.
Think Kids- A trauma informed, researched based training in collaborative problem solving.
Lagging skills- The reason an individual is struggling with a situation
APT-Assessment and Planning Tool used to formulate a plan B for a student
Problems to be Solved- The time when an individual struggles with a challenging behavior
Plan B- a problem solving technique that addresses the youth and adult concern
