2 left: Special Ed and Professional Expectations!!
ELA = English Language Arts. It contains reading, writing, research, and speaking & listening.
ELA is not on the EK Checklist
It lives on the phase checklist
English EK portfolio is written before gatewaying
Gateway out of the phase needs to happen to be awarded English credit (negotiations can be made)
Students need to complete 4 credits of English in high school
English is not earned in English classes only
can be earned in math, science, social studies, the arts, and other places as well
College/Career Bound Reading Projects (CBRPs): Learners must complete 5 per phase. The goal is to ensure that learners are engaging with ELA material and applying knowledge in authentic and meaningful ways.
What:
1. Manual
2. Book (fiction/non-fiction)
3. Novel/Graphic Novel
4. Negotiated compilation of source materials
5. College course work
Where:
1. Studios
2. Personal Projects
3. Internships
4. College/ career training
HOW:
Reading Logs are an opportunity for learners to build skills to be life-long readers. There are 4 required for each phase.
Audience Reflections are where learners demonstrate their ability to listen and reflect. There is a minimum of 3 required per phase, but learners should aim to complete more.
Research Projects are designed to:
Broaden students’ knowledge and help build passion for a topic
Encourage curiosity and wonder
Use diverse resources
Integrate with other learning opportunities (i.e. studios, internship, etc)
Encourage learners to do the authentic research of a discipline/career path (not always the same)
Build research skills that can be utilized on other projects
Develop skills of gathering, organizing, analyzing, and presenting information
Required:
One per phase
MLA/APA formatting required based on topic of project
Bibliographic information recorded
Phase Three is a paper ONLY/ Phase Four is the GRP
Note-taking in format of learners' choice
Presentation of information in some medium
Learners reflect daily in End of Days (EODs), weekly in an End of Week (EOW), and finally in an End of Term (EOT). This counts as ELA writing credit. Learners must maintain proficient (80% or better, including EOWs and EOTs) EOD stats to gateway and obtain proficient habits.
EOD=200 words
EOW=500 words
EOT=1000 words
Along with proficient EODs/Ws/Ts, learners must also have proficient Exhibitions. Exhibitions are a 10-15 minute presentation given by the learner to the learning team. The learner discusses academic and personal growth throughout the term. This is also part of the speaking competency for ELA.
Everyone has a story. Learners are asked to express their authentic selves in the autobiography project. This project must be completed before graduation and there is a minimum of 25 pages (or equivalent) due before gatewaying from Phase Three to Four.
ELA Rubrics: This is just a sampling of how we assess work.
