2 left: Special Ed and Professional Expectations!!
What (did you do) addresses the context for the learning. Because so many students do personalized activities, they need to clarify and explain the nature of the activity they're defending. Do they attend a weekly Karate class for 6 months? Or go to a week-long equestrian camp? Or did they look up and develop their own fitness routine and tried it out for 3 months, recording the results along the way?
So What (did you learn) identifies the actual learning. We call this a "Competency Defense" because this is where the student makes the case that the work they are sharing demonstrates the standard or competency. For PE, for example, NH has 6 main competency statements:
Curriculum Guideline 1: Engages in a physically active lifestyle.
Curriculum Guideline 2: Achieves and maintains a health enhancing level of physical fitness.
Curriculum Guideline 3: Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns, proficiency in a few, and applies these skills and patterns in a variety of physical activities.
Curriculum Guideline 4: Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies and tactics as they apply to the development of motor skills and the learning and performance of physical activities.
Curriculum Guideline 5: Identifies that physical activity provides opportunities for health enhancement, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and social interaction.
Curriculum Guideline 6: Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity.
In our model, the students would have to identify how their activity met each of those. One sport or activity may demonstrate all 6 guidelines, but the description, new knowledge, awareness, and ah ha's will all be unique.
Now What (will you do after having had this experience) is an interesting one, where the student focuses the reflection back on themselves. What did they get out of this experience? Was it everything they hoped for? What was successful? Challenging? How has their perception of themselves and wellness changed? What new thoughts or questions or goals emerged?
