BCEP Overview

Since 1894, we have been exploring mountains, researching the mountain environment, advocating for protections and access to our beautiful lands, and educating people on how to recreate in the mountains. The Mazamas Basic Climbing Education Program (BCEP) is an eight-week class that includes weekly assignments, team breakout sessions, conditioning hikes, and field sessions. Students learn and practice basic technical skills needed to function safely as members of a climb team. Technical sessions are held in both snow and rock terrain, as well as the Mazamas Mountaineering Center (MMC). Sessions may include  “alpine” (late night/early morning) starts.

It is anticipated that BCEP will be organized into teams of approx. 20 members, including 12 students, a team leader and a co-leader, as well as several assistant instructors.

In this course, you will learn technical rock climbing methods such as top-rope outdoor climbing, climbing techniques, basic climbing knots, belaying from below, and rappelling. You will learn snow climbing techniques, including snow and glacier travel, glissading, and self-arrest with an ice axe.

Additionally, you will learn how to condition for climbing, find your way with a map and compass, read weather conditions, and select and pack gear, and what to expect on alpine climbs.

As a successful BCEP graduate, you will have the skills to join Mazamas A and B climbs for peaks such as: Mt. St. Helens, Mt. Adams, Mt. Hood, Middle and South Sister, and many more.

Please see the Post BCEP page for more info about A and B level climbs as well as how to sign up!

Class Structure

BCEP has three main components: online learning modules, weekly team meetings, and field sessions/day hikes.

Learning Modules

Learning modules will be assigned by your team leader depending on your team's schedule. Please make sure to read all assigned material prior to the weekly meeting.

Team Meetings

Your team will meet each week to discuss learning modules and/or practice skills. Meetings are typically in-person but may be held virtually depending on topic. Please plan for in-person unless otherwise specified.

Field Sessions

Weekends generally consist of field sessions and/or conditioning hikes. Click the link above for more information about field sessions. Conditioning hikes are selected by the team leader and assistants and will be communicated at the start of the class.
