R-Values Explained

What do R- values mean?

The term "R"-value represents how well insulation restricts heat flow. To test for R-value, a piece of insulation is placed between two plates in a laboratory. Heat is then passed through the material to test the thermal conductivity, measured in BTUs per hour. The greater the "R"-value the better the insulation.

For reference the "R"-Value of 1" of wood is about R1.5 and the insulation in your house wall can be R15-R30.

So what about camping equipment?

A sleeping pad's R-value measures its capacity to resist heat flow through it (hence the "R"). The higher a pad's R-value, the better it will insulate you from cold surfaces. Sleeping pad R-values range from less than 2 (minimally insulated) to 5.5 or more (very well insulated). You can also stack multiple sleeping pads to increase the R-value. For example, stacking a closed cell foam pad and an inflatable pad.

Note: Make sure you test your gear before you go on a climb. Try camping close to home or even in your back yard during the winter to make sure your systems are dialed-in.
