Culture Team:
Inclusive Excellence Team:
The New York Times recently released a special edition both electronically and in print called The 1619 Project. According to the NYTimes, it is, "a major initiative observing the 400th anniversary of the beginning of American slavery. It aims to reframe the country’s history, understanding 1619 as our true founding, and placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of black Americans at the very center of the story we tell ourselves about who we are." Even if you are not teaching Social Studies or English, this is a great piece that includes essays from various intellects, and poetry and art. It even links modern day activities to historical events.
Wanting to incorporate Inclusive Excellence in the Sciences and Math? Here's a great resource for Math: It's an equity based approach to teaching Mathematics called Transforming Mathematics: An Equity Based Approach (Roth, 2019). Here is a great resource for Science: Diversity and Equity in Science Education (Lee and Buxton, 2010).
Personalized Learning Team:
Another attribute of personalized learning is Social Construction. Kallick and Zmuda argue that Social Construction occurs when "...students build ideas through relationships with others as they theorize and investigate in pursuit of common learning goals."
Social Construction can be observed around the building when:
Social Construction requires scaffolding , coaching, and TIME.
Play
While play is crucial for a child's development, it is also beneficial for people of all ages. Play can add joy to life, relieve stress, supercharge learning, and connect you to others and the world around you. Play can also make work more productive and pleasurable. Go to https://voiceofplay.org/benefits-of-play/ for more about the benefits of play.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a common, chronic, and long-lasting disorder in which a person has uncontrollable, reoccurring thoughts (obsessions) and/or behaviors (compulsions) that he or she feels the urge to repeat over and over. Those with obsessions experience unwanted thoughts, images, and urges that cause significant distress, while those with compulsions have behaviors that are performed to help decrease the distress that the obsession has caused. Compulsions can be visible/observable behaviors or mental acts that are not seen by others. Teachers can utilize specific classroom strategies to help support students who are dealing with symptoms of obsessions and compulsions.
