STUDENT ACCIDENTS/ILLNESS/CONCUSSION
The Board of Education believes that school personnel have certain responsibilities in case of accidents, illness or concussions that occur in school. Said responsibilities extend to the administration of first aid by persons trained to do so, summoning of medical assistance, notification of administration personnel, notification of parents, and the filing of accident reports.
Further, pursuant to po5340 Revised 08-21-2019 Student Accident/Illness/Concussion Parents who inform coaches and teachers that their child is being treated by a healthcare professional must provide written clearance for full or limited participation in class, practice, activity, or competition. Students who have a diagnosed concussion are not allowed to participate until cleared by a physician.
HEALTH ROOM
School personnel shall not diagnose illness or administer medication of any kind except in accordance with District Policy.
If you become ill during the school day, you should obtain a pass from your teacher and report to the health room.
The school nurse is only available during certain time periods each day.
Efforts will be made to help treat your illness or relieve discomfort to the limit of our abilities here.
If it is deemed that you need to have a parent or guardian come and pick you up, the phone call will be made from the nurse's office or from the main office.
The Nurse or Health Assistant will make a call home if a student needs to be picked up from school.
Students should NOT call/text home PRIOR to visiting the Health Room.
MEDICATION
All prescription medications are kept by the school in secure areas.
Prescription medications are dispensed according to physician's instructions at the appropriate time(s).
Inhalers may be kept with the student provided there is a signed consent form on file in the office. The form must be signed by both the physician and parents.
The school does have acetaminophen and ibuprofen available to students if a signed permission slip is on file. If a student needs a different over-the-counter medication (sinus, allergy, etc.), a non-prescription medication form may be obtained in the office to be signed by a student's parents/ guardians.
THE DISTRIBUTION OR CONSUMPTION OF PRESCRIPTION OR OVER-THE-COUNTER MEDICATIONS IN ANY MANNER OTHER THAN DESCRIBED ABOVE IS A VIOLATION OF SCHOOL RULES AND MAY BE IN VIOLATION OF THE LAW. CONSEQUENCES MAY INCLUDE EXPULSION FROM SCHOOL AND REFERRAL TO LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT.
The specific procedure for prescription and non-prescription medications in our school is governed by administrative guideline.
ACCIDENTS
Employees should administer first aid within the limits of their knowledge of recommended practices.
All employees should make an effort to increase their understanding of the proper steps to be taken in the event of an accident.
However, any staff member or volunteer who, in good faith, renders emergency care to a student is immune from civil liability for his/her acts or omissions in rendering such emergency care.
Every accident in the school building, on school grounds, at practice sessions, or at any athletic event sponsored by the school must be reported immediately to the person in charge and to the school office.
The administrator in charge must submit an accident report to the District Administrator on all accidents.
CONCUSSION
A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury.
Concussions occur when there is a forceful blow to the head or body that results in rapid movement of the head and causes any change in behavior, thinking, or physical functioning.
Concussions are not limited to situations involving loss of consciousness.
Each school year students/parents shall be provided with an information sheet regarding concussion and head injury.
If an event may occur, the appropriate release must be signed at least once per school year.
ACCIDENT INSURANCE
The district DOES NOT provide an accident insurance plan for students. An accident plan is available at the expense of the parents. Accident forms must be obtained at the main office and returned as soon as possible. If you become ill or injured while in school:
Please notify a staff member or administrator of the illness or injury.
If an illness or injury requires immediate care, the office staff will aid you in every possible way.
State Statute (140.05) requires each student to present written evidence of completed basic and booster series immunizations; unless a written waiver to the School Board within 30 school days after being admitted to school. Personal hygiene products are available in the guidance department, physical education and team locker rooms.
