Statins are a class of medications primarily used to lower cholesterol levels in the blood. Medications used to lower or reduce blood cholesterol levels ( Atorvastatin, Simvastatin, Rosuvastatin).
Uses of Statins: Statins may be recommended if you have cardiovascular disease (CVD) or at a high risk of getting it in the next 10 years. Statins can be also used to treat familial hypercholesterohypercholesterolemia.
Mechanism of action of Statins : mode of action is primarily via inhibition of HMG-CoA reductase ( hydroxy methyl glutaryl- coenzymeAreductase ). By blocking this enzyme, Statins reduce the amount of cholesterol synthesized by the liver, leading to the lower levels of LDL "bad" cholesterol in the blood stream.
Common side effects :
- Muscle pain with a "nocebo" effect contributing to its perception.
- Hepatoxicity / headache.
- Myalgia / myopathy.
- GI effects ( diarrhea, flatulence).
- CPK increase.
- Avoid in pregnancy.
