What type of soil?
This week in Science we were investigating the different types of soils in our local environment. Children went down in to the school garden area and dug out some sub-soil- about 10cm deep. Once we got the soil samples we brought it back into class and followed the key below to see what type of soil we have in our garden.
Children were able to roll the soil into a ball and some were able to even roll into a sausage shape. This shows that the soil type in our garden is loam.

A Manor Memory: Year 3's Cinema Adventure to Watch The Wild Robot at Stratford Manor Primary School
Year 3 at Stratford Manor Primary School had an unforgettable Manor Memory when we went to the cinema to watch The Wild Robot! The movie, based on Peter Brown’s book, brought our favourite character, Roz the robot, to life on the big screen. The beautiful animation of the island, the animals, and the stunning landscapes made us feel like we were right there with Roz as she learned to survive and make friends. We loved seeing how Roz grew from being a lonely robot into a caring friend, learning important lessons about kindness, love, and protecting nature.
The trip was full of laughter, heart, and adventure. We couldn’t help but laugh at the funny moments, like when Roz tried to walk like the geese or when she took care of the baby bird. The movie reminded us of the importance of caring for each other and the world around us. This special outing wasn’t just about watching a film — it was a Manor Memory that we will always treasure. The day we watched The Wild Robot will stay with us for a long time, and we can't wait to see what other exciting adventures await us in the future!

Our Stone Age Adventure!
This week, we had a fantastic time at West Ham Park! We were transported back in time to the Stone Age!
Did you know there are three Stone Age periods? We learned about the Palaeolithic, Mesolithic, and Neolithic periods. We even tried to build our own mini shelters, just like people did thousands of years ago. It was harder than it looked!
The best part was when we got to make fire using flint and steel! It was amazing to see how our ancestors started fires. We felt like real Stone Age explorers!
We can’t wait to learn more about history and maybe even try more exciting activities like this.

Today, we had a very special visitor who came to teach us about Christingle! A Christingle is a special candle that we make to celebrate the birth of Jesus.
First, we learned about what each part of the Christingle represents. We drew pictures of things we could do to be the light in our world. We put our drawings in a circle around the Christingle, just like the fruits and candles that go on a real Christingle.
Next, we walked around the classroom as children in the light. We felt happy and bright! We even froze in place to show how we felt when it's dark outside.
It was a fun and exciting day learning about Christingle. We can't wait to share what we learned with our families!

Our African Adventure continues
Our class had a fantastic day at the Horniman Museum, where we participated in the interactive 'Around Africa' workshop. This engaging experience allowed us to explore the diverse cultures, traditions, and landscapes of Africa.
We began the workshop by learning about the different regions of Africa and the unique characteristics of each. We then had the opportunity to explore a simulated African market, where we learned about the various goods traded and the cultural significance of markets in African societies.
In addition to exploring culture, we also learned about the fascinating wildlife of Africa. Overall, our visit to the Horniman Museum was a memorable experience. The 'Around Africa' workshop provided us with a unique opportunity to learn about African cultures, traditions, and landscapes in a fun and interactive way. We are eager to continue our exploration of Africa and its rich heritage in the future.

Our First Recorder Lesson!
The Year 3 class was buzzing with excitement as they eagerly awaited their first recorder lesson of the year. Their music teacher began by demonstrating the correct way to hold the instrument, emphasising the importance of proper posture. The students listened attentively as she explained the different parts of the recorder, from the mouthpiece to the bell.
After a brief demonstration, the class was encouraged to try blowing air through their recorders. With varying degrees of success, they worked on producing a steady sound and adjusting the pitch by covering different holes. The classroom filled with a delightful cacophony of squeaks and whistles as the students experimented.
To conclude the lesson, the class attempted to play a simple tune together. Although there were a few challenges, their combined efforts resulted in a surprisingly harmonious sound.

Shining a Light on Shadows: Our Year 3 Investigation
Have you ever tried to see something in complete darkness? We did! For our science investigation, we put objects in a shoebox and made a hole. We tried to guess what was inside without peeking. It was really hard!
Next, we made a second hole opposite the first one. With a little bit of light coming in, we could see part of the object. But it was still tricky to figure out what it was.
Finally, we tried shining a flashlight into the box. That's when it became easy! We could clearly see the object and even tell what it was.
We learned that light helps us see things better. When there's no light, it's almost impossible to tell what's inside a box. But with a little bit of light, we can start to see shadows and outlines. And with a bright light, we can see things clearly.
It was a fun and exciting experiment!

Our Amazing Africa Adventure Begins!
We're so excited to start our new topic, Amazing Africa! We had a blast learning about this incredible continent. We read some fascinating books about Africa, explored an online map to find different countries, colored beautiful African patterns, and even took a quiz to test our knowledge of African flags. We learned about the different animals that live in Africa, like lions, elephants, and zebras. We also found out about the amazing cultures and traditions of the people who live there. What a fun way to kick off our African adventure!
