Spring has finally sprung! Yesterday we went on an educational visit to Mudchute Farm, Isle of Dogs. It was a fascinating jounrney where we admired the skyscrapes when we were riding the DLR.
In Science we have been learning about animals and what they eat. We have been asking questions during lesson time and used those questions to plan an enquiry. We asked if pigs and ducks eat plants. From our research at the farm we discovered that they eat both. Some ducks like to eat slugs and snails! We were also lucky enough to pet and feed the sheep. Did you know a male sheep is called a ram?

Spring term's curriculum unit 'Leaving Home' has been very thought provoking. We have been learning about the reasons why people choose or are forced to leave their home. We are currently making a 'Refugee Welcome Pack' for refugee children who have moved to Stratford to flee unsafe living conditions. They may be new to speaking English so we are going to use the puppet to help children show how they are feeling. Stay posted to see how the finished product turns out. We hope our project spreads joy.

This week, Year 1 visited Stratford Library. We visited the library as part of Making Manor Memories and to celebrate our love of reading. The children listened to the librarian Selena reading them a story about multi-coloured glasses. Later on, the children had a chance to explore the texts in the London Underground themed area and got stuck into some fascinating books. The children selected a special book each to keep in the classroom to enjoy during story time and reading for pleasure time. Books are magical!

Happy World Book Day. We had a blast. Thank you Year 1 families for helping with the amazing costumes. Today was exhilirating, we began the day with a parade and we showcased our costumes. Later in the day we celebrated World Book Day by forming the letters 'WBD' with the rest of the school and recorded it using a drone!
We also played Masked Reader and drew existing or our own book characters. The finale to our day was visiting the Year 6 classroom and we listened to the older children read our favourite books. The best day ever.

The mini-mathmaticians in Year 1 have been learning how to count beyond 20! They have learned how to represent the numbers as words, numerals, pictures, place value cards, with tens frames and Deines. Now they know that the first digit in a two-digit number means how many tens and the last digit in a two-digit number means how many ones. The children were amazing at using super sentences to say how many tens and ones are in a number.

What an amazing adventure we had today. We went to Hackney Marshes to conduct a scientific investigations and find evidence that is is winter! We searched far and wide, we discovered that deciduous trees no longer have any leaves but evergreen trees have leaves all year round. We used our senses to think about what we can see, hear and feel that tells us it is winter.

"I know it is winter because deciduous trees have lost their leaves." - Christian 1N

Our new Curriculum Unit is all about 'Leaving Home'. We have been learning about an inspiring and bold woman called Mary Seacole who left her home in Jamaica to help sick and injured soliders in Crimea. With the help of our learning partners we have been sequencing the key events in Mary Seacole's in chronological order using time language such as 'first', 'then', 'next' and 'last'. Mary's life was fascinating, did you know that Mary's mother taught her how to be a doctress instead of going to school and that Mary spend all of her money to help the soldiers.

Shapes, shapes, shapes! We love to talk about shapes. In Maths we have been learning all about 2D and 3D shapes. It was so much fun when we went on a shape hunt to see which shapes we could find in our classroom. We found 18 circles on the carpet and 20 triangles the washing line! We have been using our language skills to demonstrate how we know what a shape is by talking about their corners, sides, edges and vertices. We then sorted the shapes into different criterion such as number of sides, number of corners, colour and size.
