On Wednesday we had a spectaclar day - it was Science Day! We had the opportunity to carry out investigations with our teachers and friends. There were three experiments that we completed where we observed the properties of materials closely. We wanted to find out which materials were stretchy and absorbant.
As we are upcoming scientists, we asked questions before conducting an equiry and we also ensured we took measurements accurately using tools such as a ruler and a pipette to gather data. Also, we had the experience of presenting our results to Year 2 using bar charts and pictograms.
Thank you Mr Haleem for organising such a fun day!

In English we have been writing narrative stories based on the film 'Song of the Sea'. The visuals and animations in the film are captivating! The experience days have helped us bring the story to lifie, and helped us expand our range of vocabulary. We have used drama to understand the plot, used water colours painting and drawings to help us plan our own stories. We have been determined to use our imagination and creativity and to show our knowledge of the 'FANTASTICS'.

In Maths we have been learning about volume and capacity. We know how to describe the volume of liquids using vocabulary such as full, half full, half empty, quarter full and empty. We can also use super sentences to compare the volume. Also, we have been learning about the capacity of containers and we have measured the capacity using non-standard units. Well done Year 1 for being excellent learners.
Please check out our Maths Journals. We are very proud of our descriptive journals.

As a part of our curriculum unit 'Recycling in Action' we have been learning about the school thread to 'Sustainability'. In our Geography and Science lessons we have been observing materials and looking for various recycling symbols and what they mean.
We want to speak up to maked our world a better place. To do this we want to let everyone know how important recycling is and spread to message across our community. We have been creating placecards with catchy messages. Also, we listened to Nathan Bryon and Depo Adeola read their new book 'Speak Up!' which is about activism and the story is inspiring us to take action.

Our curriculum unit 'Recycling in Action' has taught us all about how to recycle, reduce and reuse our waste materials. The marvellous books we have been reading such as 'Clean Up' and 'The Rainbow Fish' have inspired us to reuse plastic bottle caps to create collaborative 3D art.
We have entered a competition hosted by Sealife, and we hope our creativity influences other people to show empathy for plastic pollution and how it has a negative impact on the wildlife. First, we collected and sorted bottle caps by size and colour. Then we used each colour to represent a scale of the rainbow firsh. Wish us luck in the competition!

As a part of our curriculum unit 'Recycling in Action' we have been learning about the school thread to 'Sustainability'. To help us appreciate our world more, we have been learning all about the five oceans and seven contients in Geography.
We have used technology to improve our locational knowledge and map skills by finding the oceans on continents as a team on the interactive whiteboard and independently on Class Dojo. Also, we visited the oceans virtually using VR headsets which helped us experience them and later we recorded ourself naming them and desccribing them.

Maths is all around us! Year 1 had an action packed day filled with Maths activities. We began the day parading ouor Maths-themed outfits. Thank you Yaer 1 families for putting in so much effortm with the costumes. Then we listened to 'One is a Snail, Ten is a Crab', followed by problem solving activities to count how many feet a group of animals have.
Later we participated in a number investigating and enjoyed searching for Maths in the school grounds. We found shapes, numbers and even repeating patterns. After that, we took part in a thrilling Kahoot! quiz and played dominoes.

On Wednesday, we went on a journey to the south bank of the River Thames to visit the aquariam. In our curriculum unit 'Recycling in Action' we are learning about how plastic pollution impacts the animals of ocean and how we can help.
There was so much to see! The sea life was incredible, we saw sharks, turtles, manta rays, jellyfish and many species of fish all shapes and sizes. Sadly some of the animals are endangered due to pollution and overfishing. We can help by reducing our use of single use plastics and to eat sustainably sourced fish.

This week, Year 1 have been preparing for our independent write. In English they have been writing about 'The Storm Whale' by Benji Davies where the main character Noi adopts a baby blue whale. The children couldn't believe their eyes when they found a variety of toy ducks that they needed to take care of. The children were inspired by Noi and too care of the ducks by feeding them, taking them for a swim and reading them a fabulous book.
The experience helped the children generate ambitious vocabulary to use in their independent write such as time adverbs and imperative (bossy) verbs.

We have had a wonderful day celebrating King Charles' Coronation and learning about British history. We learned why the king is getting a coronation on Saturday and that there hasn't been a coronation in 70 years!
Our lunch was royal themed and we danced our socks off at the Coronation Ball. We made unforgettable memories with our friends. In class, we made a collaborative creative piece using mixed media to construct a Union Jack.

Today we had a very special visitor at Stratford Manor. Thank you Lisa for teaching us how to become more sustainable. We learned that it is beneficial for our planet to reduce and reuse materials before we recycle them. During the '3 Rs' we identified which material our waste is made out of and then decided if the material should be reused, recycled or go in the rubbish bin. We also looked closely at how waste can be reused, for example, into new toys, storage and bags.
Later in the day we had a 'Marine Story Time' where we found out how plastic pollution in the oceans made Fin the shark ill. We reflected on how our actions impact the sea creatures.

It has been delightful having the children return to school after a restful break. This week the children began Summer Term's Curriculum Unit 'Recycling in Action' and the children are eager to learn more about 'Sustainability'.
In Art, the children have been making woven textile pieces inspired by Caroline Baxton. The mini-artists have learned how to weave recycled materials and fabrics to create an ocean scene to raise awareness about water pollution.
