On Maths Day, Year 5 had a fantastic time exploring the fun side of numbers through a variety of exciting activities! The children took part in different maths investigations that got them thinking and solving tricky puzzles. They played interactive maths games that tested their quick thinking and teamwork skills. One of the highlights was listening to and reading stories that included maths challenges hidden inside – turning reading time into a fun maths adventure! Everyone enjoyed working together, using their problem-solving skills, and discovering that maths can be creative and fun.
As part of our learning about the Windrush Generation, our Year 5 children worked in groups to explore a range of sources, including stories, diary entries, fact files, pictures and books. Each group took turns to read what the previous group had written before adding new facts and information to build on the work. This collaborative research helped the children develop their teamwork and reading skills while learning about the experiences and contributions of the Windrush Generation. They were excited to discover new details and enjoyed sharing what they had learned with their classmates.
In Year 5, children have been exploring the concept of air resistance as part of their science topic on forces. To investigate how air resistance works, they designed and made three parachutes of different sizes. Each parachute was dropped three times from the same height, and the children carefully timed how long each one took to reach the ground. Through this experiment, they discovered that larger parachutes took longer to fall, showing that they experienced more air resistance. The smaller parachutes fell more quickly, helping children understand that less surface area means less air resistance. It was a fun and hands-on way to explore how forces affect movement!
Year 5 have begun their new chapter 'Geometry'. They started off learning about different types of angles. Children then learnt how to measure angles on a straight line and in a triangle. Keep your eyes open as more maths learning is coming!
In Year 5, the children have been exploring their exciting new science topic: Forces. They began by learning key vocabulary such as push, pull, gravity, water resistance, air resistance, and friction. Through practical investigations and hands-on experiments, the children have been discovering how different forces affect the movement of objects. From testing parachutes to exploring how objects move on various surfaces, they’ve been developing a deeper understanding of the world around them while building their scientific enquiry skills.
