This week in Year 2 we have been learning about the importance of good hygiene in Science. To investigate this further we looked at the impact of using soap to wash our hands. In our investigation we used black pepper that was used as bacteria a bowl of water and some soap. First we dipped our soap-less fingers in the bowl of water to see what happens. We saw that the bacteria still gets stuck to our fingers. We then used our fingers full of soap and dipped it in water, from this we saw that no bacteria got stuck to our fingers.

This week in Year 2 we have been looking at the games and toys children play around the world. We looked at the different games played and then located the countries on the world map using an Atlas. We then looked deeper into the countries and searched for their capital city and the surrounding countries and linked this all back to our previous learning of continents of the world.

This week it was Science week at Manor Primary School. First we looked at different scientists that have had an influence in the world. Then we read some stories that taught us what a scientist is. After that, we conducted two main investigations. One was about planet-friendly burgers, where we looked at food miles and how we could then create our own planet-friendly burgers. We also conducted a stretchy slime experiment to compare the stretchiness of our slime compared it to other stretchy items such as rubber bands. We then changed the temperature of one slime to see how the stretchiness is affected. We found out that the cold slime was the least stretchiness.
In order to celebrate our learning as this term’s curriculum unit came to a close, Year 2 held a cake sale in order to help raise money for a local children’s charity- ‘The Magpie project’. Children had the opportunity to decorate, set up and also sell during the event. Many pupils and parents donated and turned up to participate in this wonderful cause. After much organisation and hard work we managed to raise £201.95.
