La chiesa di San Vito dei Greci

La chiesa di San Vito, sita nel cuore del borgo antico di Martina Franca, è considerata una delle chiese più antiche della città. Risale al XIII secolo ed è stata la chiesa maggiore di rito greco-ortodosso del duecentesco Castrum Martinae.

Nel corso dei secoli la chiesa è stata ristrutturata più volte, l'edificio originario aveva il tetto a doppio spiovente e due ingressi, sulla porta maggiore s'innalzava un campanile con due campane; in seguito il prospetto è stato elevato in altezza fino a mascherare i due spioventi.

L’originario portale di ingresso si trova oggi sul lato più lungo dell’edificio e reca sulla chiave di volta il motivo decorativo di un giglio, simbolo della dominazione francese su Martina all’inizio del XIV secolo. Il secondo ingresso, munito di bussola, è stato aggiunto in un secondo momento sul lato più corto della chiesa

L’interno presenta una sola aula rettangolare con vistosi decori settecenteschi a colori vivaci che coprono in parte gli altari in pietra. Sull’altare maggiore trionfa la statua di san Vito con ai piedi il tipico cagnolino.

Lungo le pareti si aprono tre altari a muro dei quali due dedicati alla Madonna; il primo riproduce in una cornice mistilinea l’affresco della Madonna della divina Provvidenza. Sul lato opposto, a metà della parete è conservata una pregevole cantoria in legno.

The Church of San Vito

The church of San Vito, located in the heart of the ancient village of Martina Franca, is considered one of the oldest churches in the city. It dates back to the 13th century and was the major Greek Orthodox church of the 13th century Castrum Martinae.

Over the centuries the church has been renovated several times, the original building had a double sloping roof and two entrances, a bell tower with two bells rose over the main door; later the façade was raised in height to mask the two slopes.

The original entrance portal is now located on the longer side of the building and bears the decorative motif of a lily on the keystone, a symbol of French domination over Martina at the beginning of the 14th century. The second entrance, equipped with a compass, was added later on the shorter side of the church

The interior has a single rectangular hall with showy eighteenth-century decorations in bright colors that partially cover the stone altars. On the main altar the statue of San Vito triumphs with the typical dog at his feet.

Along the walls there are three wall altars, two of which are dedicated to the Madonna; the first reproduces the fresco of the Madonna della divina Provvidenza in a mixed-line frame. On the opposite side, in the middle of the wall there is a valuable wooden choir loft.
