Il Trullo Sovrano

Il Trullo Sovrano di Alberobello è noto oltre che per la sua grandezza, ma per le sue singolari caratteristiche costruttive: la maestosa cupola conica in malta e chiancarelle è alta circa 14 metri, si erge su un piano sopraelevato al centro di un gruppo costituito da dodici coni, raggiungibile dall’interno attraverso una scala in muratura.

L’ala a sinistra del complesso di trulli costituisce il suo nucleo originario che risale agli inizi del 1600, mentre la parte restante è stata costruita nella prima metà del 1700 per conto della famiglia del sacerdote Cataldo Perta.

In origine il Trullo era denominato “Corte del Papa Cataldo”, dal nome del sacerdote che edificò la struttura e la utilizzò come dimora, i trulli circostanti erano adibiti ad abitazione per i suoi dipendenti. Nel tempo il trullo ha svolto funzine di corte, cappella, spezieria, cenobio, oratorio campestre. Nei primi anni del 1800 vi dimorarono le reliquie dei Santi Cosma e Damiano, patroni di Alberobello.

THE Trullo Sovrano

The Trullo Sovrano of Alberobello is known not only for its size, but also for its unique construction features: the majestic conical dome in mortar and chiancarelle is about 14 meters high, stands on an elevated floor in the center of a group consisting of twelve cones, reachable from the inside through a masonry staircase.

The left wing of the trulli complex constitutes its original nucleus which dates back to the early 1600s, while the remaining part was built in the first half of the 1700s on behalf of the family of the priest Cataldo Perta.

Originally the Trullo was called "Corte del Papa Cataldo", from the name of the priest who built the structure and used it as a residence, the surrounding trulli were used as homes for his employees. Over time the trullo has served as a court, chapel, apothecary, monastery, country oratory. In the early 1800s the relics of Saints Cosma and Damiano, patrons of Alberobello, lived there.
