Torre di Porta Grande e Porta Piccola

La Torre di Porta grande 

Torre di Porta Grande è stata realizzata verso la fine dell’XI secolo dai Normanni ed è posizionata sul colle più alto del centro abitato, così che si potesse tenere sotto controllo la zona circostante e la valle d’Itria grazie anche al collegamento visivo con le fortificazioni di Ceglie Messapica e Ostuni.

Il nome della torre deriva dalle sue dimensioni e dal suo posizionamento adiacente alla Porta Grande, il principale varco d’ingresso del paese. Insieme a quest’ultima e all’antica Chiesa Madre, la torre faceva parte dell’antico sistema difensivo realizzato tra il XIV e il XV secolo composto da edifici civili, religiosi e militari. Durante questo periodo la torre, che aveva precedentemente conosciuto un periodo di decadenza, venne ampliata e ricoperta da pietre squadrate.

Dal XVI alla prima metà del XIX secolo la torre passò sotto il controllo ecclesiastico perdendo così ogni funzione militare. Testimonianza di questo periodo sono il palazzo Vescovile situato alle spalle della torre, gli stemmi episcopali presenti sulle mura e la statua di San Nicola situata su un angolo del terrazzo. 

Durante l’Ottocento l’edificio subì delle ulteriori modifiche tra cui l’abbassamento di un piano che la portò agli attuali 17 metri d’altezza e la realizzazione di un porticato laterale con una scala che portava ai piani superiori. Nel 1860, come conseguenza dell’abolizione dei Beni Ecclesiastici la torre ospitò la Guardia Nazionale e la prigione, successivamente venne impiegata come scuola e poi come sede del Comune dopo l’acquisizione da parte di quest’ultimo.Nel corso della sua storia la Torre Grande ha subito svariate opere di recupero, le più recenti sono quelle del 1991 e del 1995. Attualmente viene usato centro esposizioni.

The great tower

Torre di Porta Grande was built towards the end of the 11th century by the Normans and is positioned on the highest hill of the town, so that the surrounding area and the Itria valley could be kept under control thanks also to the visual connection with the fortifications of Ceglie Messapica and Ostuni. The name of the tower derives from its size and its positioning adjacent to the Porta Grande, the main entrance gate of the village. Together with the latter and the ancient Mother Church, the tower was part of the ancient defensive system built between the 14th and 15th centuries consisting of civil, religious and military buildings. During this period the tower, which had previously experienced a period of decay, was enlarged and covered with square stones. From the 16th to the first half of the 19th century the tower came under ecclesiastical control, thus losing all military function. Testimony of this period are the Bishop's Palace located behind the tower, the episcopal coats of arms present on the walls and the statue of St. Nicholas located on a corner of the terrace.

During the Nineteenth century the building underwent further modifications including the lowering of a floor that brought it to the current 17 meters high and the construction of a side porch with a staircase leading to the upper floors. In 1860, as a consequence of the abolition of ecclesiastical goods, the tower housed the National Guard and the prison, later it was used as a school and then as the seat of the municipality after its acquisition. Throughout its history the Torre Grande has undergone several recovery works, the most recent being those of 1991 and 1995. Exhibition centre is currently used.

La Porta piccola

A Piazza Mazzini, tra il Palazzo del Governatore e la Chiesa di Santa Lucia si trova l’antica Porta “Piccenne" che in dialetto pugliese indica la Porta “Piccola”, uno dei varchi di accesso nel centro storico di Cisternino. L'antichissima porta divide la parte "moderna" della cittadina da quella antica, storica, dove tutto si mantiene suggestivamente uguale da secoli con le caratteristiche case bianche, le bellissime chiese, le piazze e le strette viuzze che compongono uno dei "Borghi più belli d'Italia".

The Small door

In Piazza Mazzini, between the Governor's Palace and the Church of Santa Lucia there is the ancient Porta "Piccenne" which in Apulian dialect indicates the Porta "Piccola", one of the access gates in the historic center of Cisternino. The ancient gate divides the "modern" part of the town from the ancient, historical one, where everything has been suggestively equal for centuries with the characteristic white houses , the beautiful churches, squares and narrow streets that make up one of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
