The Instructional Innovation Division is growing from its start date, July 1, 2020 and has acted quickly to serve the needs of the NPC Community. The division houses support from the Libraries, Instructional Technology and Curriculum Support, Perkins Grants, Early College, and Office of Accessibility and Inclusion. We serve our students, faculty, staff, and community partners.
Innovation Connections is a monthly newsletter that features division updates and college-wide innovation and collaboration. Contact Shannon Motter if you wish to contribute to the content.

What is your educational background and what makes you great at your job?
I have a Master of Science degree in Instructional Design and Technology and an Education Specialist in Learning Design and Technology. I have worked in higher education for more than twenty years primarily consulting with faculty on technology integration and instructional design projects. I am also an Educator. I have been teaching business technologies and academic strategies courses for more than a decade. What makes me great at my job is that I really enjoy the art of teaching and finding innovative ways to use technology for learning.
What do you love about your job?
I love helping faculty solve their technology problems. I also enjoy teaching our students about educational technology and sharing strategies and best practices they could use to integrate technology into their classrooms.
What areas in this job are your strong points and how will this make you a great resource?
One of my greatest strengths is that I am determined to succeed regardless of any problems that come my way. I work very hard to overcome barriers and keep moving forward which enables my department to achieve the goals that we have set to provide exceptional service to the NPC community.
What are your favorite things to do/eat/read?
One of my favorite things to do is sit near water and read a good book. I also enjoy learning new things.
What's something you want to do once the pandemic is over?
I plan to go out to a concert to hear live music and dance the night away.
What goal are you dreaming about completing?
I’m looking forward to completing a Doctor of Education degree in a few years.

The Library Staff are busy preparing for our big COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT PROJECT.
What's that?
We will be removing outdated or damaged materials from the campus libraries. And we will be adding NEW titles.
Why do we remove materials? Why not keep everything?
Damaged materials checked out by a patron are very likely to become further damaged, which means that patrons regardless of fault or care of materials can be charged with its replacement. No one wants that. Worse, mold and mildew on materials will SPREAD to other materials, damaging them, and they can ruin entire sections of the collection. They are also harmful to those with allergies. Out-of-date material are also harmful. What if a nursing student reads and shares medical information from five years ago? Not only could they receive a lower grade for having out-of-date information, but this might actually cause harm to their patients if they carry this wrong information onto their job site.

Looking to the future 🚀
As we begin to close out what feels like the most difficult and trying academic years of all history, the Early College Department looks forward to the positive changes in store for us….
Just around the corner and hopefully in time for Spring 2022, is the acquisition of a brilliant software to enhance the high school student enrollment process! 🎉
Also this summer, the amazing team members of Early College will be busy prepping for the upcoming year and spending some time on:
· Strengthening student, family, and high school team resources (fliers, videos, presentations, virtual offices, and more!)
· Engaging in professional development conferences, workshops, & peer-to-peer support!
· Catching up on some rays! 🏖️
Have a great summer y'all!
This is the front cover of the academic planner arriving this week that will be distributed to high school seniors with disabilities attending NPC. Last year, the Office of Accessibility and Inclusion went through a program review that identified a need to work more with high school students to increase participation. Historically, seeking students with disabilities to request support services has been an issue with many mixed emotions. Some students may relish the idea of being independent and feel they do not need accommodations. Some students may want to not have the label along with the negative stigma associated with having a disability. Legally, students are free to choose if they want to request services or not.
The social model of disability is all about providing options for students and letting them choose the best course of action for themselves. For those who are concerned, this does not mean that the social model of disability encourages free reign or a blank check of services. It simply relaxes a previously restrictive process and offers multiple methods to reach supports. The helpful apps for students and free text to speech software found on the OAI webpage (www.npc.edu/oai) are examples.
One of the more difficult adjustments for students transitioning from high school to college is how to juggle assignments and due dates from multiple classes without being reminded when due dates approach. As uncomfortable as this lesson may be, it is valuable when entering the work world. It is hoped that this academic planner will help those students struggling with calendaring issues and schedules to become more confident in their ability to manage successfully those assignments and due dates of projects. Distribution will have the planners mailed directly to students’ homes along with an OAI brochure and pen. For convenience, steps to receive authorized accommodations are listed on the front page of the academic planner along with contact information. Ultimately, each of these steps are designed to assist students become prepared for employment and ease the transition from high school to college. The numbers will tell the story at the next program review.
Happy Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) Heritage Month!
FUN FACT! The very first NASA mission I was a part of was the Global Precipitation Measurement Mission (GPM) which was in collaboration with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).
Why is this relevant? NASA is the place that instilled in me my Innovator spirit. One of the most important things I learned is that innovation can come from anyone! Everyone has a seat at the table when we try to make things better.
In honor of APIDA Heritage Month, I wanted to share this awesome YouTube clip highlighting some leading innovators of our country!
