At MacEwan, there are a variety of areas that require regularly scheduled inspections by operational employees, manager/supervisory employees and/or Joint Work Site Health and Safety Committees (JWHSC). Inspections can include, but are not limited to, the following areas: laboratory, office, shop.

What is an inspection?

An inspection is a systematic evaluation or examination of an operation, activity and/or work site that checks or tests against established standards to identify hazards and to recommend corrective actions.

When do I need to do an inspection?

The frequency of inspections depends on the potential hazards at the work site. The following is recommended.

High Hazard – Quarterly

Medium Hazard – Twice a year

Low Hazard – Yearly

Who does the inspection?

Based on many different pieces of legislation that define inspection requirements at the worksite, an inspection may be initiated by an operational employee, manager/supervisor and/or JWHSC. Regardless of who is leading the inspection, active participation by employees working in the area is essential.

Why do I need to document the inspection?

Documentation of an inspection creates a working document that captures the positive items as well as identifying items for improvement. This document can be shared and referred to in a continual improvement process.
