Inspections
inspection program
At MacEwan, there are a variety of areas that require regularly scheduled inspections by operational employees, manager/supervisory employees and/or Joint Work Site Health and Safety Committees (JWHSC). Inspections can include, but are not limited to, the following areas: laboratory, office, shop.
What is an inspection?
An inspection is a systematic evaluation or examination of an operation, activity and/or work site that checks or tests against established standards to identify hazards and to recommend corrective actions.
When do I need to do an inspection?
The frequency of inspections depends on the potential hazards at the work site. The following is recommended.
High Hazard – Quarterly
Mechanical room
Theatre
Workshop
Medium Hazard – Twice a year
Laboratory
Storage room
Retail store
Low Hazard – Yearly
General office
Classroom
Reception
Who does the inspection?
Based on many different pieces of legislation that define inspection requirements at the worksite, an inspection may be initiated by an operational employee, manager/supervisor and/or JWHSC. Regardless of who is leading the inspection, active participation by employees working in the area is essential.
Active participation allows for:
Those who are inspecting to ask question related to potential hazards and practical solutions.
Those who are most familiar with the area and tasks to teach and explain.
Why do I need to document the inspection?
Documentation of an inspection creates a working document that captures the positive items as well as identifying items for improvement. This document can be shared and referred to in a continual improvement process.
