At MacEwan, we encourage hazard assessments to be completed for all work that has the potential to cause injury or illness.This may include aspects of travel, research, maintenance, construction, teaching. Taking the time to dig a bit deeper will lead to better preparedness and ultimately a more effective and efficient process overall.
What is a hazard?
A condition or behavior that has the potential to cause harm to people or property. Hazards may be physical, chemical, biological or psychological.
Hazard vs Risk
Risk is the chance or probability that a person will be harmed or experience an adverse health effect if exposed to a hazard. It may also apply to situations with property or equipment loss, or harmful effects on the environment.
What is a hazard assessment?
A hazard assessment is a standard documented process to identify health, safety and environment hazards and evaluate the risk associated with tasks or activities. Hazard controls are measures that are implemented to eliminate or reduce the risks of the hazards.
When do I need to do a hazard assessment?
Before starting new positions or tasks
If there are any modifications or changes to ongoing positions or tasks
Reviewed at intervals that prevent the development of unsafe and unhealthy working conditions
Who does the hazard assessment?
Everyone involved in the activity! However, it should be managed by the owner of the activity. Don't hesitate to contact HSE for consultation on your hazard assessment and control report.
How do I submit a Faculty or Department hazard assessment?
HSE requests that all Hazard Assessment and Control Report(s) be submitted by uploading using this form. Note that your submission is NOT for review and approval by HSE. Once you have submitted you may proceed with implementing your controls.
