This course prepares students to safely provide care to adults and their families with moderate to severe alterations in health or acute complex illnesses. Critical thinking is incorporated into written and verbal communications. Students synthesize knowledge for integration into their clinical practice.

Ask essential questions regarding the care and needs of adults with moderate to severe alterations in the adult patient (PO 1, Essential 2, ANA Standards 1-6, 9, 10, QSEN Competencies Patient Centered Care)
Recognize the need to consult other disciplines/members of the healthcare team when providing care to adults with moderate to severe alterations in health (PO 4, Essentials 4 & 8, ANA Standards 4, 5a, 9, 10, 16, QSEN competency Teamwork and Collaboration).
Utilize research to support nursing practice with adults with moderate to severe alterations in health (PO 5, Essentials 1 & 6, ANA Standard 13, QSEN competencies Evidence Based Practice, Quality Improvement).
Utilize a variety of sources to gather pertinent information regarding disease processes and the best nursing practices related to caring for adults with moderate to severe alterations in health (PO 5, Essential, ANA Standards 1, 4, 16, QSEN competency informatics).
Synthesize knowledge to formulate appropriate nursing problems/diagnoses for adults with moderate to severe alterations in health (PO 2, Essential 2 & 9, ANA Standards 1 & 2, QSEN competencies Patient Centered Care).
Synthesize knowledge as basis for accurate clinical decisions when providing care to adults with moderate to severe alterations in health (PO 1&2, Essentials 2 & 9, ANA Standards 1-6 QSEN competencies Patient Centered Care, Safety).
Based on synthesis of knowledge, provide appropriate nursing care to culturally diverse adults with moderate to severe alterations in health (PO 2, Essential 2 & 9, ANA Standards 5, 8, QSEN competency Patient Centered Care).
Deliver effective oral and written arguments supporting selection of appropriate nursing problems/diagnoses and care (PO 3, 5; AACN BSN Essential 2 & 6, ANA Standards 9, 10, 14, QSEN competency Evidence Based Practice).
Establish effective professional relationships to provide care to adults with moderate to severe alterations in health (PO 3, 6; AACN BSN Essentials 4, 5, 6, 8, ANA Standards 5a, 9, 10, 11, 16, QSEN competency Teamwork and Collaboration)
Coordinate care for adults with moderate to severe alterations in health (PO 3, 6, 7; AACN BSN Essentials 4, 5, 6, 8, ANA Standards 4, 5a, 11, 16, QSEN competencies Teamwork and Collaboration).
