NRSG 341 (3 credits) focuses on care of the adult individual who is experiencing an acute illness. Students integrate the nursing process as preparation for care of individuals in acute care settings. The student functions in a variety of roles and partners with health team members to provide appropriate care to assigned clients. This theory course is taken concurrently with NRSG 341L. Prerequisites: NRSG 220, NRSG 225/225L, NRSG 232/232L.
Students meet the University of Lynchburg Goals for Education by achieving the course objectives. The course objectives are derived from the Nursing Program Goals (PG) and the AACN BSN Essentials (Essential).
1. The student will integrate electronic health data, evidence-based practice, clinical judgment, and patient preferences in order to identify appropriate nursing diagnoses and determine priority nursing interventions for clients with selected medical/surgical system problems.

2. The student will implement timely, research-based interventions for adult patients with acute medical or surgical disorders that support principles of safety and quality, incorporating knowledge of anatomy and physiology; pathophysiology; disease processes; nutrition; pharmacology; and gerontology.

3. The student will demonstrate critical thinking and apply steps of the nursing process, which include synthesis of theoretical concepts and nursing knowledge and skill; physical and psychosocial nursing assessment of patients; analysis of nursing actions; planning of effective patient care; and implementation and evaluation of optimal patient outcomes.
