This course introduces the student to major concepts and commonly used terminology
related to pathology in each organ system. Selected pathophysiological phenomena,
common disease processes, conditions and injuries are analyzed relative to their clinical
manifestations and implications for nursing management.
Students meet the University of Lynchburg Goals for Education by achieving the course
objectives. The course objectives are derived from the Nursing Program Goals (PO)
and the AACN BSN Essentials (Essential).
The student will contribute to the knowledge base in the classroom by participating in
class discussions. (PO 3, Essential I & III, ANA Standard 9 & 10)
The student will identify the pathophysiology of normal and abnormal cellular
function. (PO 1, Essential I, III & VII, ANA Standard 12)
The student will explore the altered pathological response to illness. (PO 1,
Essential I, III, & VII, ANA Standard 12)
The student will transfer the knowledge of cell function to the organ and system
level. (PO 1, Essential I, III, & VII, ANA Standard 12)
The student will identify organ and system response to illness. (PO 1, Essential I,
III, & VII, ANA Standard 12)
The student will anticipate pathophysiological changes that occur with organ and
system stress. (PO 1, Essential I, III, & VII, ANA Standard 12
