Students expand the use of the nursing process with a focus on health promotion/disease prevention as it relates to psychiatric-mental health and community nursing. Students explore the use of evidence based practice through the use of research studies to promote health for individuals in the psychiatric-mental health and community settings.
The community health portion of the course provides a theoretical basis for practice in the field of population focused health. Community health content explores family assessment, rural and urban health, global health, cultural diversity in health care delivery, finance, policies, roles of the nurse in the community setting, and the use of the nursing process when the community is the client.
The psychiatric-mental health portion of the course focuses on maladaptive patterns of emotional and behavioral expression, which are studied in the context of a mental health continuum. Specific patterns included are: anxiety, withdrawal, affective, cognitive, and addictive disorders. Students are encouraged to explore selected research studies relevant to the nursing process as it is used to assist individuals, families, and groups in meeting their mental health needs. Resources in the community mental health system are identified.
