In this course, students establish a knowledge base in pharmacology. The course provides an opportunity to investigate pharmacological principles and understand the relationship between pharmacologic knowledge and nursing practice. Drug prototypes, mechanisms of action, and the implications for clinical management will be discussed.
Students meet the University of Lynchburg outcomes for Education by achieving the course objectives. The course objectives are derived from the Nursing Program Outcomes (PO), the AACN BSN Essentials (Essential), ANA Standards, and QSEN Competencies.
The Student will relate relevant physiology and pathophysiology to the use of drugs in humans.
PO 1; AACN BSN Essential I, III, IX; ANA Standard 2,3; QSEN Competency Patient-Centered Care.
Students will Identify pharmacologic principles that encompass physical and chemical properties of drugs and the biochemical and physiologic effects.
PO 1; AACN BSN Essential I, III, IX; ANA Standard 1,2,3; QSEN Competency Safety, Patient-Centered Care
The student will identify drug prototypes for major health problems, including major effects, adverse effects and relevant information for safe use.
PO 1, 2; AACN BSN Essential I, III, IX; ANA Standard 1, 2, 3,4,5; QSEN Competency Patient-Centered Care, Safety
The student will discuss nursing standards and accountability for nursing actions in medication administration
PO 1,2; AACN BSN Essentials II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII; ANA Standard 3,5, 5A, 5B; QSEN Competency Safety, Quality Improvement
