Stowe High School

Week in Review

“We create our future, by well improving present opportunities: however few and small they are.” -Lewis Howard Latimer

February 5, 2021

Our first week of February is complete and we are only two weeks away from another school break. The new year seems to be flying by and we are planning for a very busy month. Although short, this week provided time for us as a whole school to introduce Black History month by using advisory time to watch a powerful TEDx talk by a high school student about why Black history is American history. Each advisory followed the talk with discussion questions and asked students to reflect on their prior class experiences with a focus on Black history. We are also highlighting the contributions of many black and brown Americans in student announcements, in our hallways, and during lunch for the month of February.

In addition to honoring Black History month, we also are preparing for a week focused on the environment and understanding our carbon footprint. The student led Environmental Club has synchronous and asynchronous lessons planned for each day next week. They are also planning for in-person advisory time on Thursday and Friday.

The following week will also have a themed week centered around love, inclusivity, and welcoming of everyone no matter how they identify themselves. Our GSA (gay straight alliance) is preparing different educational opportunities and activities for the whole school during lunches and in-person advisory times.

Lastly, as we look ahead to the next few weeks and upcoming events for the rest of the school year, we want to let students and families know that we are planning to offer the SAT and ACT for Stowe High School students. We know that this has been difficult for students to take these tests under the current COVID situation. The tests will be administered on different days. We have been in contact with the College Board and are working with them to identify the specific dates. As soon as we have the dates, we will send another message out and start the registration process with students.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Opportunity:

Dear LSUU Parent/Guardian,

Lamoille South Supervisory Union is beginning a project aimed to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion. The LSUU administrative team has asked us to engage families and students in focus group conversations about their experiences in LSUU schools. The goal of these focus group conversations is to collect evidence of the lived experiences of LSUU students and families through an equity, diversity, and inclusion lens. We will then use what we learn from the focus groups to make specific policy recommendations to the district about ways to work towards their goals of equity, diversity, and inclusion for all students while keeping our participants anonymous.

Although committed to equity and anti-racist work, as two white academic women, we recognize the limitations in our own perspectives due to our social identities and backgrounds. As such, we are seeking parents who identify as BIPOC, LGBTQ+, dis/abled, new Americans, or other identities that have been marginalized to join us as project partners. We will also be looking to engage a few high schoolers as project partners.

We’re writing to ask if you or your high schooler would be interested in becoming a project partner with us in this work. Project partners will participate in an orientation to the focus group method, review the focus group protocols, and co-conduct focus group interviews. Project partners may also choose to continue with data analysis, coding, and confirming results. Project partners will be paid an honorarium between $100-$300 depending on the time commitment.

If you are interested in joining us in this work, please email Kathleen.Brinegar@NorthernVermont.edu and Hannah.Miller@NorthernVermont.edu to let us know. We will be in touch to schedule a time to share more details with you about your possible role as a project partner, and answer any questions you have about joining us.

Sincerely,

Dr. Kathleen Brinegar (she/her), Northern Vermont University

Dr. Hannah Miller (she/her), Northern Vermont University

Snow Days will be School Days:

As the colder weather approaches and we already saw snow this week, we need to plan for the possibility of school closings due to inclement weather and unsafe road conditions. In the event we need to call for a snow day, we have developed a remote learning plan so that students can continue with their coursework. When we have a snow day, we will follow our current schedule . For example, if we need to call a snow day on a Tuesday, the students that were scheduled for in-person will have their classes remotely via Google Meet. Students who were already scheduled for a remote day will continue with the plan that was outlined by their teachers for remote learning.
