Week in Review

“Never underestimate the power of dreams and the influence of the human spirit. We are all the same in this notion: the potential for greatness lives within each of us.” -Wilma Rudolph

February 12, 2021

This week brought an unexpected shift to remote learning however this adjustment was made smoothly with patience, tenacity and a willingness to keep moving forward. A huge shout out to our fantastic faculty and staff for making this transition uneventful and fluid for our students!

We are continuing to monitor the situation and we are working in collaboration with the Vermont Department of Health and our Director of Health Services. As soon as we have the pertinent information needed, we will provide an update on next week’s schedule and plan.

During this week, our Environmental Club planned synchronous and asynchronous learning opportunities for all students even during our remote days at the end of the week. Students watched different videos about their carbon footprint, their environmental footprint, completed surveys, and were asked to make a commitment for an action they will take to decrease their carbon footprint. Our Environmental Club did an excellent job planning this week and demonstrated flexibility and a growth mindset as we shifted to no in-person meetings. We are looking forward to next week when our Gay/Straight Alliance (GSA) will provide different learning opportunites for our students during the day and advisory. It has been wonderful to see students staying involved in work that they are passionate about and their unwillingness to let our hybrid schedule get in the way of important issues. Well Done!

Next week will be our last week before a long school break. We want to remind everyone to continue to practice safe and healthy behavior by wearing a mask around others, maintaining physical distance, washing your hands, and staying home when you are not feeling well.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Opportunity:

Dear LSUU Parent/Guardian,

Lamoille South Supervisory Union is beginning a project aimed to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion. The LSUU administrative team has asked us to engage families and students in focus group conversations about their experiences in LSUU schools. The goal of these focus group conversations is to collect evidence of the lived experiences of LSUU students and families through an equity, diversity, and inclusion lens. We will then use what we learn from the focus groups to make specific policy recommendations to the district about ways to work towards their goals of equity, diversity, and inclusion for all students while keeping our participants anonymous.

Although committed to equity and anti-racist work, as two white academic women, we recognize the limitations in our own perspectives due to our social identities and backgrounds. As such, we are seeking parents who identify as BIPOC, LGBTQ+, dis/abled, new Americans, or other identities that have been marginalized to join us as project partners. We will also be looking to engage a few high schoolers as project partners.

We’re writing to ask if you or your high schooler would be interested in becoming a project partner with us in this work. Project partners will participate in an orientation to the focus group method, review the focus group protocols, and co-conduct focus group interviews. Project partners may also choose to continue with data analysis, coding, and confirming results. Project partners will be paid an honorarium between $100-$300 depending on the time commitment.

If you are interested in joining us in this work, please email Kathleen.Brinegar@NorthernVermont.edu and Hannah.Miller@NorthernVermont.edu to let us know. We will be in touch to schedule a time to share more details with you about your possible role as a project partner, and answer any questions you have about joining us.

Sincerely,

Dr. Kathleen Brinegar (she/her), Northern Vermont University

Dr. Hannah Miller (she/her), Northern Vermont University

Snow Days will be School Days:

As the colder weather approaches and we already saw snow this week, we need to plan for the possibility of school closings due to inclement weather and unsafe road conditions. In the event we need to call for a snow day, we have developed a remote learning plan so that students can continue with their coursework. When we have a snow day, we will follow our current schedule . For example, if we need to call a snow day on a Tuesday, the students that were scheduled for in-person will have their classes remotely via Google Meet. Students who were already scheduled for a remote day will continue with the plan that was outlined by their teachers for remote learning.
