Week in Review

“Some old-fashioned things like fresh air and sunshine are hard to beat.” -Laura Ingalls Wilder

April 9, 2021

Spring is finally here. The beautiful weather this week certainly provided more options for locations for class meetings, lunch, and breaks. Students and teachers took full advantage of these opportunities and the energy was positive. We are looking forward to more days like today and yesterday.

This week was busy with SBAC training, Anagnorisis, Day of Silence, and more. In order to facilitate SBAC practice tests for 9th and 11th grade students, we hosted in-person advisory on Thursday and Friday. Advisors provided videos to students to help explain the different types of questions students will see on the tests. Students also practiced logging in and looking at sample questions. We will start our testing next week on Wednesday, April 14th for all 9th grade students. They will be completing the Math assessment. We are asking that all students arrive to the school by 8:30am and we anticipate students finishing their afternoon testing session between 2:30 and 2:40. If your student needs transportation to get to school and/or home from school, please be sure to complete the transportation need survey as soon as possible. On each testing day, students will be provided snacks and lunch however a student is welcome to bring their own lunch. Students will need to bring their own drink, preferably a water bottle that can be refilled during the testing times. In addition, we ask students to bring something they can read if they finish a testing session early. They can also bring a journal or sketchbook to draw in. Students are NOT permitted to use their cell phone at any time during the testing day.

This week we also watched our 12th grade students complete one of their graduation requirements, Anagnorisis or their Senior Defense. Students have been preparing for this day all year and during previous years in advisory. The presentations were thoughtful, unique, and allowed students to show their personalities. Anagnorisis focuses on five different pillars that students need to reflect on and provide evidence for how they accomplished each pillar (problem-solving, communication, decision-making, service and citizenship, and initiative). They all did an exceptional job!

In addition, this week are GSA (gay straight alliance) hosted Day of Silence on Thursday and Friday. Day of Silence is a national protest that allows students to remain silent as a way to acknowledge the erasure and silencing of LGTBQ+ individuals in schools. Students and adults could choose to participate by wearing a button or t-shirt which were created by SHS students.

Lastly, as we read and listen to new guidance from the state and CDC, we want to remind everyone that the school will continue to follow all safe and healthy protocols inside and outside the classrooms during each school day. With the upcoming school break, we encourage families to follow the guidelines that the Vermont Department of Health, the Governor, and the CDC have provided to ensure everyone remains healthy and can return to school after the break.

Quarter 3 Mastery Reports:

In an effort to communicate effectively with families about students academic progress as quickly as possible, beginning with Quarter 3, we will transition to distributing students’ Mastery Reports electronically, unless a mailed copy is requested by the family. Families are able to access their students’ Mastery Report via the Parent Portal which provides new instructions on how to access Mastery Reports online and how to request a mailed copy of your student’s Mastery Report.

If at any time you have questions please call Anna at 802-253-7229.

Vaccination, Quarantine & Testing

The state continues to increase vaccine access. Those 70 and up may make appointments for vaccination starting tomorrow:

  • 20 Walgreens locations now are participating in the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program.

  • Kinney Drugs, Home Health and Hospice, and Copley Hospital are among other vaccination providers, in addition to the Department of Health clinics.

  • Sign up for appointments at all sites by clicking here or calling 855-722-7878. Do not call the Health Department or your doctor for an appointment.

  • Seniors who need help can call Central Vermont Council on Aging 1-800-642-5119.

People who have been fully vaccinated and are exposed to someone with COVID-19 do not need to quarantine, as long as:

  • They are fully vaccinated (have had two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine).

  • More than two weeks and less than three months have passed since they received the second dose of the vaccine.

  • They have not had any COVID-19 symptoms since the exposure.

Get tested to help keep track of the virus in the state. Click here if you have no symptoms to make an appointment. If you have symptoms, call your provider.

Take this survey to help researchers understand how Vermonters and visitors are understanding and responding to Vermont’s COVID-19 guidelines. Complete the online survey and be entered to win one of ten $25 gift cards.

Homelessness

The Lamoille Area currently has 73 households on the Coordinated Entry list for housing. Of these:

  • 67 are eligible for a housing voucher or subsidized. Only four of those households could afford a fair market unit without those forms of support.

  • There are 6 households not eligible for any type of voucher or subsidy, which means they'll be homeless indefinitely until something else is created for them.

  • 25 of the households require long-term case management/voucher sponsorship.

  • There are 13 youth experiencing homelessness.

To end homelessness in Lamoille, we would need:

  • 52 additional vouchers or subsidized units,

  • Two additional case managers that can do long-term sponsorships,

  • Two additional case managers that can provide short term case management and sponsorship,

  • 58 single bedroom apartments,

  • 9 two bedroom apartments,

  • Three 3 bedroom apartments.

Parents and educators
