Stowe High School

Week in Review

“Be passionate and move forward with gusto every single hour of every single day until you reach your goal.” -Ava Duvernay

February 19, 2021

Wow, the February break has arrived! We are so grateful for our faculty and staff. Their dedication, patience, flexibility, and support has been phenomenal in ensuring our students are engaged in different learning opportunities in-person and remotely. These past two weeks certainly required even more patience, flexibility, and creativity as we navigated school closure and a snow day. We are also grateful for our students and families for working with us during these transitions. Your support and patience is so appreciated and helpful.

As we look forward to our break, please continue to practice and reinforce safe and healthy behaviors. The individual choices that you make can have a great impact on the health of our school communities. By following the guidelines of wearing masks when you go out, maintaining a 6-foot distance from others, avoiding crowded places, washing your hands, and staying home if you are sick, we can continue to keep ourselves and others safe. For more detailed information, please refer to these resources on non-essential travel, quarantine requirements, COVID symptoms, and testing sites.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Opportunity:

Dear LSUU Parent/Guardian,

Lamoille South Supervisory Union is beginning a project aimed to advance diversity, equity, and inclusion. The LSUU administrative team has asked us to engage families and students in focus group conversations about their experiences in LSUU schools. The goal of these focus group conversations is to collect evidence of the lived experiences of LSUU students and families through an equity, diversity, and inclusion lens. We will then use what we learn from the focus groups to make specific policy recommendations to the district about ways to work towards their goals of equity, diversity, and inclusion for all students while keeping our participants anonymous.

Although committed to equity and anti-racist work, as two white academic women, we recognize the limitations in our own perspectives due to our social identities and backgrounds. As such, we are seeking parents who identify as BIPOC, LGBTQ+, dis/abled, new Americans, or other identities that have been marginalized to join us as project partners. We will also be looking to engage a few high schoolers as project partners.

We’re writing to ask if you or your high schooler would be interested in becoming a project partner with us in this work. Project partners will participate in an orientation to the focus group method, review the focus group protocols, and co-conduct focus group interviews. Project partners may also choose to continue with data analysis, coding, and confirming results. Project partners will be paid an honorarium between $100-$300 depending on the time commitment.

If you are interested in joining us in this work, please email Kathleen.Brinegar@NorthernVermont.edu and Hannah.Miller@NorthernVermont.edu to let us know. We will be in touch to schedule a time to share more details with you about your possible role as a project partner, and answer any questions you have about joining us.

Sincerely,

Dr. Kathleen Brinegar (she/her), Northern Vermont University

Dr. Hannah Miller (she/her), Northern Vermont University

Vaccination, Quarantine & Testing

The state continues to increase vaccine access. Those 70 and up may make appointments for vaccination starting tomorrow:

  • 20 Walgreens locations now are participating in the Federal Retail Pharmacy Program.

  • Kinney Drugs, Home Health and Hospice, and Copley Hospital are among other vaccination providers, in addition to the Department of Health clinics.

  • Sign up for appointments at all sites by clicking here or calling 855-722-7878. Do not call the Health Department or your doctor for an appointment.

  • Seniors who need help can call Central Vermont Council on Aging 1-800-642-5119.

People who have been fully vaccinated and are exposed to someone with COVID-19 do not need to quarantine, as long as:

  • They are fully vaccinated (have had two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine).

  • More than two weeks and less than three months have passed since they received the second dose of the vaccine.

  • They have not had any COVID-19 symptoms since the exposure.

Get tested to help keep track of the virus in the state. Click here if you have no symptoms to make an appointment. If you have symptoms, call your provider.

Take this survey to help researchers understand how Vermonters and visitors are understanding and responding to Vermont’s COVID-19 guidelines. Complete the online survey and be entered to win one of ten $25 gift cards.

Homelessness

The Lamoille Area currently has 73 households on the Coordinated Entry list for housing. Of these:

  • 67 are eligible for a housing voucher or subsidized. Only four of those households could afford a fair market unit without those forms of support.

  • There are 6 households not eligible for any type of voucher or subsidy, which means they'll be homeless indefinitely until something else is created for them.

  • 25 of the households require long-term case management/voucher sponsorship.

  • There are 13 youth experiencing homelessness.

To end homelessness in Lamoille, we would need:

  • 52 additional vouchers or subsidized units,

  • Two additional case managers that can do long-term sponsorships,

  • Two additional case managers that can provide short term case management and sponsorship,

  • 58 single bedroom apartments,

  • 9 two bedroom apartments,

  • Three 3 bedroom apartments.

Snow Days will be School Days:

As the colder weather approaches and we already saw snow this week, we need to plan for the possibility of school closings due to inclement weather and unsafe road conditions. In the event we need to call for a snow day, we have developed a remote learning plan so that students can continue with their coursework. When we have a snow day, we will follow our current schedule . For example, if we need to call a snow day on a Tuesday, the students that were scheduled for in-person will have their classes remotely via Google Meet. Students who were already scheduled for a remote day will continue with the plan that was outlined by their teachers for remote learning.
