With the school year drawing to a close, this is a period of reflection and celebration for our students, staff, and the wider community. In this edition, we'll highlight some of the remarkable achievements of our students and innovative projects that are shaping our classrooms.
Stay tuned for insights, success stories, and a glimpse into how we’re continuing to inspire and empower every student at LBS. Thank you for being part of our journey!
The STEM club students recently embarked on an exciting extra-curricular activity that combined creativity and science in a fun and engaging way. These young scientists took on the challenge of creating their own lava lamps using simple ingredients commonly found in any kitchen. The experiment not only sparked their curiosity but also provided a hands-on learning experience about the principles of density and chemical reactions.
Using household items such as vegetable oil, water, food colouring, and effervescent tablets, the students explored the fascinating interactions between different substances. They observed how the oil and water, due to their different densities, created distinct layers. The addition of food colouring and effervescent tablets added an element of excitement, as colourful bubbles danced and floated, mimicking the mesmerising effect of a real lava lamp.
This experiment was more than just a fun activity; it was a practical lesson in scientific concepts. The students learned about the immiscibility of oil and water and the science behind effervescence. They also gained valuable experience in following scientific procedures, making observations, and drawing conclusions.
Through this engaging project, the STEM club students demonstrated that science is not just confined to textbooks and laboratories. It can be explored in everyday settings, making learning both enjoyable and accessible. This lava lamp experiment exemplifies how extra-curricular activities can ignite a passion for science and inspire the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers.
Year 10s start their mock examination series on Monday 17th June - Thursday 27th June. A reminder that students should be revising, and seeking support where needed from staff in advance of their exams. 100% attendance to the examinations is expected, with students in full uniform. The National Online Safety programme publishes a weekly #WakeUpWednesday update for parents/carers. This weeks update relates to 'Township'.
Potentially addictive online games are nothing new, but the specifics of this kind of media can vary enormously – and, as a consequence, the risks in each individual game are just as diverse. The city-builder Township is no exception: providing its legions of devotees with accessible, satisfying fun … but exposing them to potential hazards at the same time.
However, any safeguarding issues that the game might have can (with a little knowhow) be neutralised – allowing young players to have some engrossing fun without adults needing to worry about children’s data, their money or their mental wellbeing. This guide outlines how to help young gamers enjoy Township safely and responsibly.
I hope your find this information useful.

The Return of Woody the Wood Pigeon 🐦
Hold onto your hats, because today we’re revisiting the hilarious saga of Woody the Wood Pigeon, read the first instalment here if you missed it – our beloved feathered friend who just can’t seem to stay away. If you thought Woody's first visit was a riot, wait till you hear about the sequel. This time, Mr. Deeks (our resident pigeon whisperer) was out, and it was up to our very own school site manager, Bobby, to save the day.
Picture this: It’s a peaceful morning in the refectory, with students enjoying their break 🍳 and chatting away. Suddenly, in swoops Woody, causing chaos and sending trays flying! With Mr. Deeks unavailable to perform his pigeon-whispering magic, the responsibility fell to Bobby. And boy, did he rise to the occasion – but not without a few hiccups along the way! 🤣
For a thrilling 30 minutes, Bobby transformed from site manager to stealthy pigeon catcher. Armed with nothing but his wits and a very determined look, Bobby navigated through tables and chairs, engaging in a high-stakes game of “catch Woody the Wood Pigeon.” 🎯
There were moments of high drama: Woody perched precariously on the dessert counter, Bobby deftly dodging trays of spaghetti 🍝, and a daring chase through the salad bar 🥗 that had everyone on the edge of their seats.
But Bobby was undeterred. With the agility of an Olympic sprinter 🏃♂️ (and maybe a bit of help from the lunchtime crowd shouting suggestions), he skilfully guided Woody towards an open window. And with one final, gentle swoosh of a tea towel, Woody was out – free to flap its wings and tell its friends about the daring escape from the refectory.
The dining hall erupted in applause 👏, and Bobby was hailed as the hero of lunchtime. His quick thinking and bravery turned what could have been a chaotic break into a memorable school tale. Woody’s return reminds us that sometimes, unexpected challenges bring out the best in our team and we have the very best team here at LBS!
Stay tuned for more stories of everyday heroism and the unique experiences that make our school community special. Until next time, thank you for being part of our wild and wonderful journey! 🌟
