Weekly Highlight from the Head of School!

Dear Parents/Carers,

We are delighted to share a standout moment from this week, underscoring the exceptional opportunities available to our students at Lordswood Boys' School. This week, our students had the privilege of collaborating with surgeons from Birmingham Children's Hospital.

The engagement and enthusiasm displayed by our students were remarkable as they delved into the intricacies of surgery. Through hands-on activities such as practicing knot tying with strings, mimicking the precision required in repairing delicate blood vessels, our students demonstrated extraordinary skill and teamwork. A particularly delightful moment was observing students adeptly stitching a banana peel, an unconventional yet effective simulation that hones their precision and dexterity.

Beyond honing practical surgical skills, our students also participated in a workshop exploring various careers and prospects in the healthcare profession. These experiences transcend traditional classroom learning, providing our students with real-world exposure that shapes them into the leaders and professionals of tomorrow.

At Lordswood Boys' School, we are committed to offering diverse and enriching experiences that extend beyond the confines of conventional education. The session with Birmingham Children's Hospital surgeons not only sparked interest in the medical field but also fostered teamwork, focus, and curiosity among our students.

We extend heartfelt gratitude to the surgeons for generously sharing their time and expertise, making these invaluable opportunities accessible to our students. Together, we are nurturing a generation equipped to tackle the challenges and embrace the opportunities of the future.

Warm Regards,

Mrs Kang,

Head of School.

PSHEE Updates

From Miss S Ali, Lead Professional for Religious Education & PSHE

Dear Parents/carers,

I hope this message finds you well.

I am writing to express my delight in our students participating in the PSHE workshops this Wednesday. It was truly a rewarding experience for them, and they exhibited exemplary skills and character throughout the sessions, demonstrating respect and resilience.

Dr. Andrea Jester conducted a workshop with 20 students in Year 9 who are keen on pursuing careers in medicine or healthcare. The students engaged in learning how to suture and showed remarkable determination in their efforts. They also displayed respect towards one another, the visiting doctors, and the surgical equipment provided.

In the second session, selected students from Year 7 to Year 10 received training on anger management and effective communication of feelings. The boys who participated demonstrated a high level of respect towards our guests. They were educated on the medical consequences of certain behaviors and actively took part in a yoga session, which was quite impressive to observe.

Attached are some images and student testimonials from the event:

Session 1:

Zyid Almahdi: "I learnt about the life of a surgeon and how hard it is to become a doctor but you get to help so many people. I am now very sure I would like to work within the NHS and help people too."

Ayaan Ateeq: "It was such a fun experience. I am now, in fact, thinking of a career in assisted robotic surgery. I would love to have more opportunities in school like this."

Session 2:

Lewis Smith: "I found it very interesting because it helped me understand how this could impact me in the future."

Warm regards,

Mrs. Ali

NOS Updates - 1 March 2024

The National Online Safety programme publishes a weekly #WakeUpWednesday update for parents/carers. This weeks update relates to 'BULLYING'.

Bullying has long been a pervasive issue in schools – and, being realistic, it’s regrettably a problem which is always likely to exist to a certain extent. There are still plenty of steps we can take as trusted adults, however, to lend support, comfort and reassurance to children who are going through this deeply upsetting experience.

Such a highly emotive topic can be a difficult one to talk about with children – but honest, open communication nevertheless remains vital to young victims’ wellbeing. It’s important to be aware, then, of effective ways to broach and explore the subject. Our #WakeUpWednesday guide has expert advice on effective ways to support children who are being bullied.

I hope your find this information useful.

Sport fixtures and training schedules for week beginning 4 March 2024

Weekly sports round-up from Mr Janes, Director of Sport

Year 7 Football

The Year 7 team hosted Bishop Ullathorne last night in the Quarter Final of the West Midlands Cup. Bishop proved a very strong outfit and our students stood up well to the challenge. Bishop were the eventual winners with their quality coming through. Hamza and Omar were joint Man of the Matches with solid displays that showed great game understanding.

Year 8 Football

The Year 8 ESA side hosted Harborne last night in a league fixture. It what was a thrilling game that was full of goals, Lordswood came out on top with a 6-5 victory. The performance of the team demonstrated the levels the students can reach, consistency needs to improve throughout the game in order to really reach the level required. Mahdi Khan was a constant threat throughout the game, running in behind and stretching the opposition.

Primary Provision

Mr Janes visited Chad Vale Primary School this week to attend their Year 5 Parents Evening. It was great to meet so many Year 5 parents and to see so many familiar faces in terms of the students who we have worked with. Thank you to Chad Vale for allowing us to attend to further develop our partnerships with our local feeder Schools.

Upcoming Fixtures

The Year 11 Football team have a Semi-Final next Wednesday as they host Colmers. This could be the last game for the students representing Lordswood, they are very much looking forward to the game and doing all they can to reach a Cup Final in their last year at the School.

MUSIC ANNOUNCEMENTS

😆😃Frontline Funny 😃😆

On a chilly, damp March morning, our very own superhero, Mr. Deeks, donned his cape and sprang into action to assist the latest addition to our Lordswood family: Woody the Pigeon🐦‍.

Picture this: as the clock struck 8am, Woody strutted into the Refectory with an air of confidence, perhaps eyeing up the breakfast buffet 🍳 with dreams of devouring some delectable delights.

But alas, Woody's culinary escapade was short-lived! With a mix of concern and amusement, our vigilant staff spotted Woody's bold entrance and swiftly called in the reinforcements.

Enter Mr. Deeks 🦸, our resident pigeon whisperer, armed with his trusty net 🥅and a determination to rescue our feathered friend from a fate of breakfast-time chaos.

With a few strategic maneuvers and a sprinkle of finesse, Mr. Deeks managed to gently guide Woody back to safety, away from the tantalising temptations of the Refectory.

But the adventure didn't end there! Later in the morning, Woody made a surprise return to the main reception area , still in need of Mr. Deeks' expert guidance to find his new abode near our beloved garden areas.

Oh, the tales of Woody the Pigeon's misadventures will surely be recounted for years to come, thanks to the heroic efforts of Mr. Deeks and the ever-watchful eyes of our Lordswood family.

Stay tuned for the next chapter in Woody's wild journey!

Yours in feathered folly,

I hope you have a good weekend and I look forward to updating you with more news next week. Until then you can always contact me directly at: l.williams@centralacademiestrust.co.uk.
