Remembering the events of Holy Week
Welcome
Welcome to our Remembrance of Holy Week. As we will be away next week, let us remember what happens in Holy Week. We begin by remembering that we have been in the season of Lent, which began on Ash Wednesday. During this time of Lent we have been asked to use our hands, our hearts and our voices to turn back to God. Let us sing a song which reminds us of this.
Opening Prayer:
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit... Amen
God of power and mercy
In love you sent your Son
That we may be cleansed of sin
And live with You forever
Bless as we gather to reflect on his life.
May we always thank you for Jesus.
May we learn from his example the way we should live.
We ask this through Christ our Lord
Amen
Palm Sunday
Reader: A reading from Luke’s Gospel:
As Jesus and his disciples approached Jerusalem, they came to Bethphage at the Mount of Olives.
There Jesus sent two of the disciples on ahead with these instructions:
“Go to the village there ahead of you and at once you will find a donkey. Untie the donkey and bring it to me. If anyone says anything, tell him, “The master needs it and then he will let you go at once.”
This happened in order to make what the prophet had said come true, • “Tell the city of Zion, look your king is coming to you! He is humble and rides on a donkey.”
Holy Thursday
Reader: A reading from Matthew’s Gospel:
While they were eating Jesus took a piece of bread, gave a prayer of thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples.
“Take and eat it,” he said, “This is my body.”
Then he took a cup, gave thanks to God, and gave it to them.
“Drink it, all of you,” he said, “This is my blood, which seals God’s covenant, my blood poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”

Good Friday - Garden of Gethsemane
Reader: A reading from Matthew’s Gospel:
“The sorrow in my heart is so great. Father, your will be done”
The friends of Jesus were asleep.
Jesus was alone.
He was afraid.
He prayed for strength and courage

Good Friday - the Crucifixion
Reader: A reading from John’s Gospel:
Jesus went out, carrying his cross, and came to “The Place of the Skull”. There they crucified him and two other men, one either side of Jesus.
Pilate wrote a notice and had it put on the cross. “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews,” is what he wrote.
The chief priests said to Pilate, “Do not write “the King of the Jews,” but rather, “This man said, I am the King of the Jews”.
Pilate answered, “What I have written stays written.”
Jesus' body is taken down from the Cross
A reading from Mark’s Gospel:
Joseph of Arimathea brought a linen sheet, took the body down, wrapped it in the sheet, and placed it in a tomb which had been dug out of solid rock. • Then he rolled a large stone across the entrance to the tomb.
Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of Jesus, were watching and saw where the body of Jesus was placed.
Reader: A reading from Mark's Gospel:
When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James ... went to the tomb.
They had been saying to one another, “Who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?” When they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been rolled back.
As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man, dressed in a white robe, sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed.
But he said to them, “Do not be alarmed; you are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has been raised; he is not here.
