Creative Writing

Monday-Friday

June 22-July 23

2:00 - 4:00pm Synchronous & 1-hr Asynchronous

The purpose of this Creative Writing course is to provide students opportunities to develop, extend, and refine the craft of writing. Students will develop their knowledge of the craft of writing by analyzing the characteristics of sub-genres (e.g., satire, parody, allegory, pastoral) that are used in poetry, prose, plays, novels, short stories, essays, and other genres in order to write their own. They will analyze the ways in which the themes of various works represent a view or comment on life, the ways in which irony, tone, mood, style, and the “sound” of language achieve rhetorical or aesthetic purposes, and the philosophical arguments presented to determine whether the authors’ positions have contributed to the work and credibility of characters. Students will engage in interactive reading and writing assignments, many of which include informal writing throughout the process. Creative Writing for Senior High fulfills a G requirement of the UC/CSU Subject Area Requirements. Creative Writing is designed for students to create original forms of descriptive writing, poetry, drama, and fiction. Vocabulary development, creative writing techniques, and skills are explored. The purpose of creative writing is to both entertain and share human experiences like love or loss. Writers attempt to get at a truth about humanity through poetics and storytelling. Techniques used in creative writing include character development, plot development, point of view, dialogue, metaphors and similes, imaginative language, and emotional appeal. Special attention to Lyric Writing due to a partnership with the Pasadena Playhouse.
