We travelled from London Euston via Stockport, arriving in Buxton shortly after lunch. First stop was the ‘public tap’ of spring water for which the town is globally renowned. Students took the opportunity to fill up their bottles ready for the first walk of the week - through Buxton and Buxton Country Park to the viewpoint at Solomon’s Temple which offers fine views over the area. Continuing southwards we continued past High Edge Raceway to start the scramble up and down the Dragon's Back at Chroome Hill and onto Longnor where the TV series ‘Peak Practice’ is filmed. We were all happy to see the coach which took us to our accommodation at Youlgreave
A gentle walk to Bakewell, arriving in time for lunch, and with plenty of time to enjoy a slice of Bakewell Tart whilst we are there! It’s 3½ miles each way, taking us through some of the finest countryside that the Peak District has to offer.
Day 3 - Wednesday 29 June
Today's walk took us away from Youlgreave past a Stone Age circle and through Robin Hood’s Stride and the Hermit’s Cave and onto Elton. Continuing through rolling green fields to cross the High Peak Trail and Pennine Bridleway, we passed into the small hamlet of Heathcote and onto the picture postcard village of Hartington in time for a restorative ice-cream.
We travelled by coach to Alton Towers where students enjoyed attractions such as the Nemesis, Oblivion, Air, Runaway Mine Train, Congo River Rapids, Hex – the Legend of the Towers and The Smiler.
We walked to Buxton through an impressive limestone ravine. We say goodbye to the Peak District as we are now catching the train back to London after a fabulous trip.
