London Calling participants were off with good spirits on a cycle tour of Central and East London. Students learned about Southwark’s original purpose, the Globe, and the history of Tower Bridge. The weather was blustery with sun and rain, but it didn’t dampen spirits. In the afternoon, we marched to the top of Tower Bridge watching both the opening of the bridge, and had great views of London.
Day 2 - Tuesday 28 June
Our eclectic and eccentric tour of St Paul’s turned morphed into a visit to the London Mithraeum; a Roman Cult Temple found right in the heart of the City of London. We saw artifacts and had an interesting immersive experience of what a ceremony might have been like. Following this, we went to explore the views from the rooftop garden at One New Change - St Paul’s - great views and we were suitably wind-swept for the group shot! A short trot across the Millenium Bridge (no wobbles!) we had time for a quick al-fresco lunch at Borough Market before taking on the Escape Room Challenges - Mr Palmer’s team versus Mr Murray’s team. Both completed the challenge in under 60 mins - CJP’s team prevailing, but it’s not the winning, it is the taking part! Onwards and upwards (quite literally!) to Canary Wharf tomorrow!
Day 3 - Wednesday 29 June
Today after our Architectural tour of Canary Wharf we visited the iconic architectural structure known as the O2. We did the 'Up the O2' experience followed by a lunch inside the O2 and after all that climbing, we had a nice relaxing game of ten pin bowling!
Day 4 - Thursday 30 June
The theme for today was Religion, Crime and Punishment. We started with a trip to St Paul’s Cathedral then we crossed the Millennium Bridge and went to the Tate Modern where students challenged themselves to find a piece of artwork imitating life for them. After lunch in Borough Market we visited The Clink Prison Museum.
Day 5 - Friday 1 July
After all of the museums from Tuesday and Thursday, today was all about activities!
The group completed the high ropes and kayaking in Shadwell Basin - all had fun, and our instructor Miriam had to work hard as we had 6 capsizing moments from 2 students! We finished our Activities Week with a lovely local Italian meal - a good time was had by all! Thank you Mr Murray for accompanying Mr Palmer and the group this year!
