38 students and 5 teachers headed west from Heathrow and landed in Belfast where we were picked up by our wonderful bus driver Jeremy who drove us to White Park Bay Hostel with a stop off at the Dark Hedges made famous in Game of Thrones. Once checked in everyone walked down to the beach and built stone sculptors. Room 1 was the winner of the tallest stone sculpture.
The day was spent at Xplore Outdoors where we met up with Gareth and his team for both dry and wet activities. With rain and wind the dry activities were wetter than expected and with nice thick wetsuits the wet wasn’t as cold as it might have been. Archery, team building games and coast-steering were the order for the day. The students had an exhilarating once in a life-time experience when they jumped into the sea from rocks 10 feet above the water.
This morning we visited the important historical city of Derry-Londonderry where we walked across the commemorative Peace Bridge and then walked around the 17th century built cannon defended walls of Derry. Lunch at the famous Guild Hall with a small break-away group visiting the Bloody Sunday memorial. The afternoon was spent hydrozorbing and exploring the treetop experience. Very wet but superb fun with lots of squeals of excitement as they were strapped into the seat to hurtle down the slope in a bundle of fun.
We’ve had an outstanding day in natural Northern Ireland. On the ferry across to Rathlin Island we were accompanied there and back by a pod of dolphins; twenty or so of the most gorgeous guides surfing along in our wake was the highlight of a day of highlights. We were on Rathlin for the puffins and they also obliged; gliding and nesting the puffins amongst a huge range of sea birds definitely put on a brilliant show. After lunch, a play in the park and an ice cream we headed out to The Giants’ Causeway. Brilliant sunshine and brilliant blue skies made for a superb experience. The hill climb back had many of the adults huffing but the views were spectacular. It was a wonderful last day on the coast.
Packed up and cleaned up and out of the hostel by 8:30. Headed back to Belfast where we checked out the exhibits at the Titanic Museum. Cable car rides took us through the bowels of the ship while video and static displays showed the opulence of the upstairs first class decks compared to the austerity of the third class cabins and facilities. Lunch and a walk and then headed back to the bus for the airport experience.
