Welcome! This is the summer photos page! Here you'll be able to learn about STEM related subjects with pictures and captions. The five subjects that were mandatory to explain are: Robotics, Alternative Energy, Potential/Kinetic Energy, Industrial Engineering, and prototyping. The 5 STEM related subjects that I chose to do are: mechanical engineering, lighting engineering, agriculture, construction, and traffic engineering. Scroll down to see the different pictures of STEM related topics!
In this picture, the swing is coming back down from the top where it was. While the swing is going down and increasing in speed the potential energy gets converted into kinetic energy.
In this picture, the swing is reaching the point where the gravity is pulling the swing back. While it goes up losing speed, the kinetic energy is converted into potential energy.

This is a factory where rocks are processed into bags to sell to other companies or people. Here there are many different types of rocks being processed into bags for purchase. People run machines to make sure each bag of rocks can be bagged up and sent to a store for sale. Trucks deliver the rocks to stores and the trucks also bring in rocks from other places to be reused/recycled.
There are two buildings that run the overall business. The building that collects rocks to create the cement and the building that breaks the rocks down and ships them . This is the building that collects rocks with drills and special equipment to be processed later. This building also receives rocks from other places other than just their local mine. Here you'll be able to see the nuclear power plant. This would be a great alternative choice when switching from fossil fuels. According to energy.gov, Nuclear power has the highest capacity factor with natural gas 36.7% behind! The only downside of picking nuclear power is that it isn't clean or renewable so it could get pricey as materials get lower. If you're looking out to get the most reliable energy, nuclear is the one to pick! [Chart from website below]

For the next three pictures you'll see different parts of the computer. In this picture, you will be able to see the power supply of the computer and the hard drive. The power supply is what it is called, it supplies the computer with power to make it turn on. Next to it in blue, you'll see the hard drive. The hard drive is the main source of where data is stored. It can range but, the one I have is 1 terabyte of storage
The motherboard, GPU, and cooling fan can be seen. The motherboard is the wiring of the parts of the computer. It allows for each part to connect to it and communicate with one another. The GPU or known more commonly as the graphics card is located where it says GeForce. Now I couldn't take out the whole thing or else I would have to take apart the motherboard because they're attached. The graphics card is in charge of rendering images and videos for your computer. The cooling fan is the fan located in the center of the motherboard. The job of it is to send out the hot air from inside the computer and bring in the cool air from outside the computer.
The ram can be located next to the cooling fan. The ram is known to be the computer's short term memory. It allows apps to store data for a short amount of time. Here there are two sticks of 4 gigabyte DDR4 ram. DDR stands for double data rate and RAM stands for Random Access Memory.

In this picture, you'll be able to see a small model of an invention idea that I thought of. For people with fireplaces, this would be a saver for your wood and fire pit. The idea is that there is a plate placed underneath the fire pit so the ground is even. Then, there is a metal dome with a hook and a latch to release the smoke from the fire. In the small model, the sheet metal represents the plate and the sticks and paper represent the fire pit. The metal dome represents the biggest part! Since fire requires oxygen to burn, placing a dome, like above, on top of the fire it will slowly turn off the fire.

Here you can see that the cover is on top of the fire and will slowly make the fire burn out. After a minute or so, the fire is completely out and if the cover is left on, the wood is safe from getting wet and the fire pit is safe from becoming rusty. Now you might be thinking that the cover would be burning hot, but don't worry there is a hook on the top of the dome so you can pick it up with a pole or a stick. Once the fire has been under the dome for some time, open the valve/latch to let the smoke escape.
This is a short 35 second video that shows how my idea works. If the video doesn't work above try this link
This photo of a bike represents mechanical engineering. Workers in the STEM field would have to build this bike using parts like the derailleur, tires, suspension, frame and brakes. Once they were to connect all the parts together they would have a bike like shown. Mechanical engineering isn't only bikes though it also has to do with cars, boats, and motorcycles.

In the job of a lighting engineer, they would design and create lights for places like: parks, concerts, buildings, and even television shows! The picture above is something that a light engineer most likely placed for a park so people could see at night. But the lights that they make sometime are incredible!

In the picture above, a house in progress and being built. The type of engineer that is in charge of building stuff like houses are known as carpenters. This is a part of STEM because it has to do with constructing and it requires math.

This is a picture of my father's garden. Now when it comes to science one of the first things that I think of is life. Life science is a great subject for anyone in the STEM field to get interested in! Without life science, we wouldn't know that much about humans and other species of plants and animals. People who study in life science continue to learn new and fascinating things about living creatures.

The job for a traffic engineer is to design ways and systems for the traffic on the road. They design signs and traffic lights to enhance the flow of traffic in a town or a city. Not only do they design them but they also have to make sure that they work and install them. This relates to the STEM field because the job requires people to design and create objects to help people travel in vehicles.

Why did you choose the photos that you did? I chose the photos above because I thought that each one accurately represents each part of STEM somehow. Each of the four parts of STEM are represented.
What was your favorite photo, and why? My favorite photo was definitely the quarry. Some friends and I biked there and had a day trip and just all hung out. The quarry is huge and is really cool to look at as well.
I would like you to relate five of the photos taken to 5 of the STEM core projects that we have completed. The construction/carpenter picture is related to the passive home because we designed what the inside of our house would look like according to the area and the house under construction is undergoing some of the same thoughts that we did in class. The design process project shows the introduction of the bike since I decided to focus on the bike, also the amount the bike has changed through the years because of mechanical engineering is shown. The wind turbine project and the lighting engineer correlate with each other because in order to produce the energy for the light, you need energy and that could come from a wind turbine. The pictures of the computer that I took can be related to the code project if you were to dive deeper into the computer. The computer is completely made of code.
I would personally like to go more into the mechanical engineer topic. I would because I enjoy working with vehicles like bikes, cars, and boats.
