In this step of the design process, the problem or goal is trying to be identified. This part identifies the needs for people or an issue that can be solved. This is the step where you'll think about what needs to be solved and why it the issue needs to be resolved.
The problem that was defined for our STEM II class was that the students had to design a mouse trap car that meets certain requirements. The students were given certain materials like: balsa wood, CDs, and a mouse trap. Being able to use those materials plus any extras that their mind came across, they had to design a mouse trap car that went at least 1 meter per second and traveled at least 11 meters. If these requirements were not made, students would have points taken off their final score.
This boat is 11 meters.
