Building Bridges
by Matt Pacer
How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity! Psalm 133:1 NIV
In my mind the best metaphor for unity is building bridges. In education we often think of teachers and students building bridges together. But teachers do so much more than build bridges with their students. They are the bridge that link students and the content of the course, the link between parents and the school, between students and their parents, between students and technology, etc.
In Adventist Education teachers are the link to bridge faith and learning. Teachers and pastors in cooperation with the Holy Spirit build bridges between the school and the church. I love the way Bonita Shields put it in The Journal of Adventist Education Summer 2012. “As we collaborate together to build these bridges, God’s people will have a much better chance of safely reaching their eternal destination, and bring with them the people they have discipled.”
Jesus is the master carpenter, the ultimate bridge builder who spanned the chasm of sin between us and Him through His sacrifice on the cross. When I was teaching, I remember the Salvation unit for the second grade Adventist Encounter Bible curriculum. It used a variety of methods to convey this concept to the students, including the beautiful Nathan Green Illustration entitled, Crossbridge.
Sister White puts it this way, “In all things Christ was made like unto his brethren, that in his human nature he might give to man a perfect example. He alone could bridge the gulf that sin had made.” HM Oct. 1, 1897 par 1

Dr. Flynt’s EdTech Tips and Treasures
For this month’s focus on technology I thought I would share a few of my favorite apps for education.
FlipGrid
Best for older students, FlipGrid is a secure platform that allows students and teachers to record video responses, discussions, presentations, performances, and other video content.
Storybird
Kids preschool age and up can use Storybird to bring their amazing stories and other creative writing to life. From picture books and to poetry, Storybird allows students’ voices to shine and be shared.
Edpuzzle
Edpuzzle is a website that makes it easy to create videos for students to reference at any time. Edpuzzle also allows educators to select existing content from YouTube and post the videos with questions that check for understanding, ensuring that students are engaging with what they watch, all while avoiding the YouTube app itself.
Anchor
Podcasts have taken the world by storm, so why not make creating one a class project? Anchor is a free podcasting tool that students can use to dive deeper into virtually any content area and share their insights with an audience.
TED Ed
A great TED Talk can do so much more than fill class time with a nifty video. TED Ed offers a plethora of inspirational material, enriching academic content, discussion questions, and more ways to get kids excited about technology and how it can be harnessed to change the world. Secondary students might enjoy creating their own TED Talk, and kids of all ages can broaden their horizons with TED Ed.

We are adopting a new Social Studies program starting this coming school year of August 2023.
Our current Social Studies contract has expired. We had an extension for a couple of years due to Covid, but the contract is expired, and those resources are no longer available.
